Staal gets the $4 million a year that he was seeking

During the summer when the Penguins and Jordan Staal began contract negotiations Staal was seeking a R.J. Umberger (4yrs – $15 million) type of deal. Staal and his agent Paul Krepelka won out today as the Penguins signed Staal to a 4 year – $16 million deal. During the summer the Penguins initial offer was 4 years – $13.5 which was declined and the two sides began working off of that deal. Recently talks centered around a 2-3 year deal with the Penguins offer in the $3.3 million range and it appeared Staal would sign a short term deal but Staal‚Äôs camp countered with a four year deal. Krepelka who represents Ryan Whitney and Jordan Staal used the same ploy with Staal that he used with Whitney. During the Whitney negotiations Krepelka made it known that three teams were going to make an offer sheet to Whitney. The Penguins wentRead More »

What others are saying

The National media is sounding off on the Penguins struggles. King Drowning Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal writes, ‚ÄúThe Pittsburgh Penguins are reeling after losing 10 of their last 14 games. When you get blown out 6-1 by the Florida Panthers for a fifth straight loss at home, there are serious problems. Sidney Crosby is obviously starting to feel the heat of being captain of a ship taking on water. He blew his stack and jumped Brett McLean, of all people, as he bent over in the faceoff circle for his second NHL fight (Andrew Ference was the first). Sources say Crosby misses Ryan Malone and Jarkko Ruuttu to look after the talking in the Pittsburgh room while he leads on the ice, and he’s more upset about the Penguins not signing Marian Hossa than he’s letting on. While it’s obvious they miss defenceman Sergei Gonchar (shoulder surgery, butRead More »

Sunday Morning Quick Hits

The Penguins practice this morning at 11:30 a.m. Although the Penguins are coming off of an embarrassing 6-1 loss to the Panthers and are in the midst of a four game losing streak, don‚Äôt expect the Penguins to endure a long grueling practice this morning. The team has four games this week. Miroslav Satan has four goals in his last 26 games and has been non-existent during that stretch. Satan was dropped to the fourth line on Saturday. Therrien has proved in the past that he won‚Äôt play players in roles that they were brought in for, if they are not producing. Nils Ekman is a good example of that. Therrien‚Äôs hand has been forced in regards to Satan but it‚Äôs only a matter of time until Therrien takes Satan completely off of the top two lines. When that happens how can you even consider keeping him around? It becameRead More »

The Latest Penguins Buzz

The Penguins 7-12-1 in their last twenty games fell out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference following a 6-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. Ownership is spending up to the cap and expects a long playoff run. Is a shakeup in the works? Like I said in my previous post don’t expect a major trade soon. They don’t happen overnight. I do expect a shakeup on the roster possibly within the week. One scenario being talked about that could happen this week is Jordan Staal getting another shot at wing¬†on the top two lines. ¬† The Penguins, Ducks, Blackhawks, Wild, and Blue Jackets are among five teams that have inquired about Atlanta Thrashers forward Slava Kozlov. Sources I’ve talked to expect 6-8 teams to be in the running for Kozlov’s services at the trade deadline. Kozlov has 16 goals – 20 assists – 36 pts in 39 gamesRead More »

Game 39: Penguins faceoff against the Panthers at 1:00 p.m./ Post-Game Speculation

Updated: 10:52 p.m: Frustrations in the locker room and in the front office continue as the Penguins were embarrassed at home today losing 6-1 to the Florida Panthers. Michel Therrien‚Äôs job is safe for now. Let‚Äôs get that out of the way off the bat. If the Penguins were to continue to plummet in the standings then as always the coach could take the fall but to this point ownership has no interest in making a switch. Ray Shero has been very active in the past 72 hours but don‚Äôt expect to wake up in the morning and see the Penguins make a major trade or see Jordan Staal get traded. Those kind of trades don‚Äôt happen overnight and as of this morning the Penguins were not involved in any serious talks that would land the Penguins a top 6 winger. What I mean by a top winger is aRead More »
