Inside Look at the Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins beat Flyers 3-2 The Penguins rebounded Tuesday night and got a much needed win against the Philadelphia Flyers. They played better but they are not out of the woods just yet Pascal Dupuis was moved up to the 1st line and performed well. Dupuis led the Penguins with five shots and blistered a slap shot from the left circle to score the Penguins game winner in OT The Penguins at times controlled the play especially for a few shifts in the middle of the second period. Dupuis had three great chances on a shift early in the second and the Penguins could have pulled away but they didn‚Äôt. The Penguins did not clean up their own end well. On the Flyers first goal the Penguins had two opportunities to get the puck out of their zone and failed to do so which led to Jeff Carters goal. 21 secondsRead More »

Game 4: Philadelphia Flyers (0-2-0) at Pittsburgh Penguins (1-1-1)

This is the first of six regular season meetings between the Penguins and Flyers in 2008-09. The Flyers lead the all-time series with a 130-73-30-3 record in 236 games, including a 42-53-22-1 record on the road. Both teams have struggled out of the gate and will look to get back on track tonight. The Flyers are coming off a 5-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Monday night. The Flyers have received subpar goaltending from Marty Biron who has surrendered eight goals in less than four periods. Biron will serve as the Flyers backup tonight as Antero Niitymaki will start. The Penguins are coming off a 2-1 OT loss to the New Jersey Devils. The Penguins were outplayed in all facets of the game and were outshot by the Devils 49-15. A bright spot for the Penguins in this young season has been the play of Marc Andre Fleury. Fleury isRead More »

NHL Insider: Quick Hits from week 1

The 4-0 New York Rangers were my pick to come out of the Eastern Conference this season and even though it’s early, they look much improved from last season. The Rangers have great team speed and their power play has more puck movement than it did with Jagr at the helm. They like to move Wade Redden into the slot and give the opposition different looks. So far, so good for Markus Naslund who looks rejuvenated in New York. The Rangers have been phenomenal defensively and rank #1 in the league on the penalty kill (100.0%) Phoenix, a team on the rise is 2-0. Rookie Kevin Porter is a player to keep an close eye on this season The Vancouver Canucks are playing shutdown defense and surprisingly have scored 11 goals in two games. They have been a bit of a surprise thus far but it is very early.

Orpik on Team USA’s Radar?

Brooks Orpik is going to garner serious consideration to make Team USA for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Team USA will look for a mix of offensive and physical minded defensemen. Orpik‚Äôs skating ability and the way he performs with offensive minded defensemen, will keep him in the running until the end according to sources Anytime Marian Gaborik‚Äôs name comes up in the rumor mill the Penguins are mentioned by the national media. For the time being Pittsburgh has yet to explore making a bid for Marian Gaborik. Pittsburgh does have their eye on one potential big name Colorado and Ottawa have interest in Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin but neither team will move on Khabibulin unless he is placed on re-entry waivers. If the Hawks decide against re-entry waivers, don‚Äôt expect Khabibulin to be moved until the trade deadline Pittsburgh continues to have a strong focus on special teams in practice.Read More »

Inside Look at the Pittsburgh Penguins

Penguins fall to Devils 2-1 The most glaring stat of last night‚Äôs loss was the Penguins were outshot 49-15 by the New Jersey Devils. The Devils controlled the play, won loose pucks and they were the more physical team. Michel Therrien said it best last night when he said his team ‚Äúdidn‚Äôt work‚Äù. Goaltender Marc Andre Fleury was phenomenal and nearly stole two points away from the Devils if it wasn‚Äôt for a fluke goal off of Hal Gill’s skate. A concern for me was the Devils were the faster team. They showed a lot more team speed than the Penguins did Saturday night. The Penguins power play is now 2-18 on the season after going 1-4 against the Devils Miroslav Satan played his best game in a Penguins uniform (including the preseason). He was moving his feet well and he was creating plays in the neutral zone. Satan scoredRead More »

Vancouver, LA top Gaborik’s wishlist; Knuble on the trade block?

The Marian Gaborik situation has taking another turn for the worse as Gaborik has turned down a 8yr – $80 million deal from the Minnesota Wild. $8 million per season is likely the highest the Wild will go, but it‚Äôs not really about the money for Gaborik. The Wild have begun targeting potential trade partners. If the Wild try to move Gaborik now, they are looking for an impact player plus prospects in return. If they wait until the deadline , the Wild will likely receive a deal similar to what the Atlanta Thrashers received last season for Marian Hossa. Sources indicate if Gaborik had his wish he would be traded to the Vancouver Canucks or LA Kings. He will have that chance next summer. When Gaborik officially hits the trade block which could be very soon, the Canadiens are expected to be very aggressive in their pursuit. They wouldRead More »
