The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed 38 year old pitcher Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year contract. It will be Vogelsong’s second stint with the organization.
Vogelsong went 9-11 with a 4.67 ERA (135.0ip/70er) in 33 appearances (22 starts) last year as a member of the San Francisco Giants. He posted an 8-10 record and a 4.50 ERA in his 22 starting assignments, going 6-3 with a 2.08 ERA when pitching 6.0 innings or more. In 265 career Major League games (165 starts), Vogelsong has gone 58-68 with a 4.45 ERA. In addition, he has posted a 3-0 record and 2.92 ERA in eight games (seven starts) during the postseason.
The Boston Red Sox radio job has been offered to Tim Neverett of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Boston Herald reports. Neverett, a 49-year-old Nashua, N.H., native and Emerson College graduate, has been a member of the Pirates’ play-by-play team since 2009. According to the report, Neverett has not accepted the job yet, but he was in Boston this week meeting with the Red Sox and with officials from Entercom, which owns 93.7 WEEI, the longtime flagship station of the Sox’ extensive radio network.
Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict was fined for his hit on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and two additional plays, Burfict’s agent, Audie Attar, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder Jason Rogers from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Keon Broxton and minor league pitcher Trey Supak. Rogers hit .296 (45-for-152) with six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 16 RBI in 86 games over two stints with the Brewers in 2015, which included a .434 (23-for-53) batting average over his last 28 games. He started 22 games at first base, two in left field and one at third base for the Brewers last season. He also led the team with 13 pinch hits.
The 27-year-old Rogers made his Major League debut with the Brewers in 2014. He ranked second among Brewers minor leaguers in batting average (.296) and was tied for second in RBI (82) and tied for fourth in home runs (18) while splitting the 2014 minor league season between Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville.

The Mike Sullivan era is off to a roaring success with the Penguins averaging 0.5 goals per game through two games. Tuukka Rask picked up his 4th shutout of the season, leading the Bruins (17-9-4, 38 pts) to a 3-0 win over the Penguins (15-12-3, 33 pts) on Wednesday night.
For the Bruins role players Max Talbot (1), Jimmy Hayes (5) and Ryan Spooner (8) all scored in the win. The Bruins are 9-1-3 in their last 13 games.
Jeff Zatkoff made 25 saves on 27 shots in the loss.
