Uher, others clear waivers

Defensemen Steve Oleksy, Reid McNeill and Will O’Neill and forwards Dominik Uher and Kael Mouillierat all cleared waivers today at 12:00 p.m..

All five players will be assigned to Wilkes Barre/Scranton.


Cardinals clinch NL Central

The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL Central for a third consecutive year, beating the Pirates 11-1 in Game 2 of the Doubleheader.

It is the Cardinals first 100 win season since 2005.


Penguins lit up by Red Wings, 7-2

The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Penguins 7-2 on Wednesday night at the Consol Energy Center. Daniel Sprong (2) and Beau Bennett (3) were the Penguins lone goal scorers.

Detroit opened up a 5-0 lead by the 11:46 mark in the second period and cruised to the win.

Pittsburgh outshot Detroit 38-22 in the loss. Jeff Zatkoff made 15 saves on 22 shots in the loss.

Sidney Crosby was held scoreless for the first time this preseason.


Charlie Morton doesn’t make it past the third inning

Trailing 2-0 in a must-win to keep their division hopes alive, Charlie Morton was pulled with no outs in the third inning after loading the bases.

Jayson Heyward then delivered the knockout punch for the Cardinals with a grand slam off Bobby LaFromboise.

St. Louis is up big 6-0 in the third inning.

Staying Alive in the Central

Gerrit Cole earned his 19th win of the season and Francisco Cervelli hit a grand slam, leading the Pirates to an 8-2 win over the Cardinals in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Pittsburgh trails the Cardinals by three games with four to go.

Cervelli’s grand slam has Pirates in drivers seat

With the bases loaded and one out, Francisco Cervelli hit a grand slam in the fourth inning, blasting a Michael Wacha changeup into the left field stands as the Pirates have taken a commanding 6-1 lead after four innings. It was Cervelli’s 2nd career grand slam.
