Pirates acquire Pitcher Matt Morris

The Pirates acquired starting pitcher Matt Morris from the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named later. According to source who covers the Tigers, The Pirates and Tigers had agreed to a deal that would have sent Jack Wilson to the Detroit Tigers for prospect Brent Clevlen but the deal fell through around 3:30 est. The Tigers agreed to absorb all of Wilsons’ salary but wanted Solomon Torres to be included in the deal. Littlefield countered asking for prospect Jair Jurrjens and the Tigers balked at the Pirates demands. The Giants also inquired about Wilson along with the Cardnals but no offer was made. The Pirates asking price was very high for Damaso Marte.

There have also been some rumblings, teams are concerned about his health but if the Pirates lower their demands i envision Torres being traded. The Pirates are looking for a big return for Damaso Marte. Teams like the Red Sox are balking at their demands but Littlefield is waiting for a team like the Red Sox or Phillies to up their offers as the deadline approaches. People close to Bob Nutting believe he doesn’t want to trade any of the teams impact players until a new CEO is hired. Nutting would like for the new CEO and new General Manager decide if its time to move a player like Jason Bay for prospects. The New York Mets will not trade any of their most highly regarded young players (Lastings Milledge, Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey, Fernando Martinez) for a rent-a-player according to sources and multiple reports. They have had discussions with the White Sox about Jermaine Dye but are not offering anything that entices the White Sox.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have turned down a potential trade that would send left fielder Jason Bay to the New York Mets for outfielder Lastings Miledge and prospect LHP Jon Niese. The talks appear to be dead as the Pirates are asking for pitcher Jorge Sosa. More on this later….. According to the Boston Globe, the chances are “pretty good” that the Red Sox will trade for White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye. Red Sox outfielder Willy Mo Pena and minor league pitcher Justin Masterson are also expected to be part of the deal.
