Penguins select 5-foot-9 center Jake Guentzel in third round

The Pittsburgh Penguins selected center Jake Guentzel (5-9, 153) in the third round with the 89th overall selection in the NHL entry draft. Guentzel a smallish center, had 29 goals and 73 points in 60 games for Sioux City of the USHL. The 18 year old is committed to University of Nebraska-Omaha. Guentzel was the No. 80th ranked player by Central Scouting. One scout on Guentzel tells me, he plays a well rounded two-way game and has “excellent vision and anticipation” with the puck. The feet need to improve the scout said.

Goaltender of the future? Penguins move up in 2nd round to select Tristan Jarry

The Pittsburgh Penguins selected goaltender Tristan Jarry in the second round with the 44th overall selection. Pittsburgh moved up six spots in round 2, trading the 50th, 89th overall selections to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 44th pick. Jarry, 18, went 18-7-0 with a 1.61 GAA and .936 save percentage in 27 games for the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL. Jarry had 6 shutouts this season, tied for 2nd in the WHL. He is listed at 6-foot-2, 181-pounds. Most scouts regard him as the No. 2 or No. 3 best goaltender in the draft class. Penguins trade Tyler Kennedy to San Jose for 2nd round pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Tyler Kennedy to the San Jose Sharks for a second round pick, the teams announced. The Penguins acquire the 50th overall selection in the draft and now have seven picks. In addition to now having the 50th overall selection in the draft, Pittsburgh has picks 77 and 89th overall in the third round. The Penguins pick once in the fourth round (119th overall), twice in the sixth round (164th, 179th) and once in the seventh round (209th overall). Don’t be surprised if one of the Penguins first three picks is moved for a roster player.

Lots of chatting between Wild and Penguins on draft floor

Less than 30 minutes before Round 1, Michael Russo of the Star Tribune mentions there is “lots of chatting” on the draft floor between Wild GM Chuck Fletcher and Penguins GM Ray Shero.
