Mark Melancon was not available to pitch tonight in the Pirates 4-3 win of the Cubs Wednesday night but manager Clint Hurdle said prior to the game that Melancon will stay in the closer role.
"He's going to close tomorrow, if we have a lead late," Hurdle said. "For me it would be an absolute overreaction to one blown save to make a switch now."
Melancon's cutter velocity has slipped to around 88 mph and has even sat at 87. "I still believe that the velocity will get back to where we've seen it," Hurdle said.

The Pirates believe everything is setting up this season for Gerrit Cole to take that next step in becoming a No. 1 ace. His outing today against the Detroit Tigers was a step in that direction. "He was really good today," manager Clint Hurdle said of Cole who pitched one-hit ball into the seventh. "We've seen him really good before. The fastball command makes him dynamic."
Cole struck out 8, while walking 2 and allowing just 3 hits in six innings pitched. Cole was flawless until he exited in the seventh after loading the bases in what was his only hiccup of the night against an excellent Tigers lineup. Jared Hughes would bail him.
"He wants to be a master craftsman out on the mound, and you saw that today through six innings, for sure," Hurdle said of Cole.

The Pirates have acquired first baseman Hunter Morris from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for a player to be named later.
The left-handed hitting Morris was Milwaukee's fourth-round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
Morris, 26, hit .275 (102-for-371) with 11 home runs and 45 RBI in 103 games at three levels within the Milwaukee organization last season. He spent a majority of the season with Triple-A Nashville, where he batted .279 with 11 homers and 42 RBI in 91 games.
He led the Southern League in RBI (113) in 2012.

Reliever John Holdzkom still having options has led to him being the odd-man out in the bullpen and the reliever was sent to Triple-A this morning. In 2014, Holdzkom pitched 9 innings and had 14 strikeouts, walked just two batters and posted a 2.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. His spring training numbers were solid with 9 strikeouts, 3 walks and a 3.38 ERA in 8 innings. Jeff Hathhorn of 937 The Fan reports, Holdzkom had tears in his eyes when discussing the demotion. "It's frustrating," Holdzkom said. "I'm just going to look at it as just another part of my career. It's not going to be define me."
