Around the NHL

Red Wings C Henrik Zetterberg, who has been sidelined with a groin injury, was back on the ice Monday and is expected to play Wednesday against the first place St. Louis Blues. The Blues have claimed tough guy David Koci on waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Koci is the player who hit Sergei Gonchar in the 1st period of the Penguins first preseason game which resulted in Gonchar being sidelined for 4-6 months
The Tampa Bay Lighting are winless and Barry Melrose may be on the hot seat. The Lighting host the Thrashers tonight in what some believe may be a must win for Melrose. The Lightning can’t blame goaltender Mike Smith (1.91 GAA) for their 0-2-3 start. Newcomers such as Ryan Malone and Radim Vrbata have combined for 1 point. Vrbata was a healthy scratch in Saturday’s game. The Lightning did claim Matt Pettinger from Vancouver on waivers. Pettinger had 13 points in 76 games last season

Many expect the idea of expansion to come up at Thursday’s GM meetings. The Globe & Mail reports the idea of Toronto hosting a second franchise is being discussed. Over the summer Las Vegas has drawn serious consideration and the NHL does seem set on adding 32 teams. Adding two more teams is territory the NHL should stay away from
The Calgary Flames are looking to add a top 6 forward and could revisit the Brian Gionta-Robyn Regehr trade talk but they prefer to move Adrian Aucoin or Cory Sarich. If they want Gionta it is going to cost Regehr. On the bright side for the Flames, Todd Bertuzzi is off to a strong start netting 5 goals in 5 games.
Montreal has not only been aggressively pursuing Marian Gaborik but they have also been keeping tabs on Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
The Edmonton Oilers are off to a 4-0 start and they are one of the most entertaining teams to watch. The Oilers are young but this years squad has the potential to be better than the team that made the finals in 2006.
The New York Rangers are off to a 6-2-1 start. Tom Renney is a very good coach but he needs to open things up. The Rangers have the talent to play a more up tempo style. Chris Drury has 1 point in 8 games and is a team high -4. The Rangers are in the market for a scoring winger. We could see some movement from Petr Prucha during the GM meetings
