Evgeni did not disapoint but is their worry? Plus good news on the Arena front

Pens Lose 2-1 Evgeni Malkin did not disappoint in his first NHL game as he netted his first career goal late in the second period. Despite out shooting the Devils 16-4 in the 3rd period, the Penguins couldn’t muster anything past Marty Brodeur. Malkin was good not great but he showed he is the total package. It maybe be premature to say this but i’ve seen enough already and Malkin is the real deal but their is some concern. He has unbelievable offensive skills for how big he is but one thing that worried me was it seemed he had his head down a bit to much through the neutral zone. He’ll most likely fix that problem but Colin White was looking for the right time to line him up at center ice all game. Because of his size he’s a easier target through the middle and we don’t wantRead More »

Why didn’t the Penguins pursue Petr Skyora ?

The Pittsburgh Penguins head into tonights game against the New Jersey Devils with their prized position for the first time this season; ‘Evgeni Malkin’. Haven’t the Devils seen this before? Last season the Devils opened up against the Penguins in Sidney Crosby’s debut and this season they get Malkin. Evgeni is going to drastically improve this team but how much is uncertain. The Penalty Kill is upgraded but the Penguins lack top 6 wingers to play with their two young stars Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. One player Ray Shero should have had on his radar was Petr Skyora who was left on the free agent market until late August. Skyora has underachieved the past few seasons but has the speed and goal scoring ability to have a fountain of youth in the new NHL. Instead Shero set his sights on bringing back Mark Recchi and pursuing Anson Carter whoRead More »

Evgeni Malkin = Sergie Fedorov & More

Evgeni Malkin is fully healed from a separated shoulder and will make his anticipated debut tonight against the New Jersey Devils. The addition of Malkin on the ice is like getting a Sergei Federov in his prime. He is that good. Malkin and Crosby will not be on the same line but expect the pair to see lots of 4 on 4 time together and power play time. With Malkin back in the lineup it will be interesting to see if he can jump Ryan Malone from his lackluster start. I’ve said from the middle of last season that management should trade Malone while he has value before the rest of the league finds out what were finding out; that maybe all Malone might be is an 20 goal scorer. Jordan Staal will start on the 4th line, but he is expected to get some time on Sidney Crosby’s leftRead More »

Jim Fassel out in Baltimore

Two straight losses to Denver and Carolina have led to the dismissle of Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassle. Head Coach Brian Billick will take over the offensive duties. The Ravens stand at 4-2 in first place in the AFC North Division but could easily be 2-4. Their first two wins they beat up on Oakland and Tampa Bay. It took them a last second field to beat the Browns then if it wasn’t for Steve McNair’s late game heroics against San Diego then would have lost to the Chargers. Baltimores schedule only gets harder and the Ravens are on the way down.

Ziggy Palffy coming out of retirement?

Reports out of slovakia have reported that Ziggy Palffy is training in his hometown and is contemplating a return to the NHL. Palffy is not elgible to return to the NHL until February. The Penguins still own his rights and it will be interested to see if they would think about bringing him back or trading his rights. Quote from Ziggy talking about a possible return per (www.cassovia.sk) “Regarding my official return on the ice, everything is open at this moment. I started practicing recently, though my official return could happen only after February when the 1-year period I am mandated to stay away from competitive hockey expires. You’ll just have to wait and see”. It was first reported from the same newspaper in August that Ziggy is comteplating a return so time will tell how this plays out. Updated: Evgeni Malkin will make his debut this Wednesday against theRead More »

They’re Back: Steelers rout Cheifs 45-7

For the first time since February 5th 2006, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed the entire NFL why they are the defending Super Bowl Champions. The Steelers came into to the game a despearate team at 1-3 and used that desperation to the Cheifs disposoil and trounced the Cheifs 45-7. Ben Roethlisberger was nearly perfect from the first snap of the game and his precision passing opened up the running game where the Steelers had a field day against a staggered Chiefs defense. The Chiefs were playing like it was first day of hitting practice missing tackle after tackle. Kansas City running back Larry Johnson was an non-factor finishing the day with only 26 yards on 15 carries. The reason for the defense resurgence after two lackluster games is plain and simple: Troy Polamalu. Healthy for the first time since the opening of training camp Polamalu led the team with 9 tacklesRead More »

Pittsburgh 6 – Rangers 5

Sidney Crosby was at it again scoring with 3.3 seconds left in the third period to give the Penguins a rare road win against the New York Rangers. Crosby recorded 1 goal and 3 assists but his late game heroics were the difference. With the Penguins on the power play and the game looking like it was going to overtime Crosby threw a puck to the net that bounced off defenseman Aaron Wards foot and in the back of the net. Penguins improve to 2-1 with the win. Rookies Eric Staal and Kris Letang each recorded their first NHL career goals. Ryan Whitney scored 2 goals with Quellet and Crosby netting 1 each.
