Day 1 NHL Free Agency Frenzy; Live Updates

Day 2 12:58 a.m. There is a 1yr 1.75 million offer on the table to forward Todd Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi is believed to be looking over three other offers with Calgary among the interested parties. With all of this talk of Jagr, I wouldn’t look past Markus Naslund who has been on the Penguins radar since the clock struck noon on July 1. Source tell TIOPS Ray Shero is taking calls regarding Ryan Whitney and listening to offers but it appears ownership wants Whitney to stay put. Penguins expect a decision from Jarkko Ruutu by Wednesday morning. No offer has been made to Jason Smith but the interest is there. The Penguins have yet to meet the demands of Brooks Orpik

Pirates’ Duffy To See Shoulder Specialist

From today’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette… Friday, August 24, 2007By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette HOUSTON – Pirates center fielder Chris Duffy will visit a specialist next week to further examine his ailing left shoulder. The results of an MRI taken earlier this week, disclosed today, showed what the team described as “normal wear and tear” in the rotator cuff. The immediate plan was to wait for the examination to determine whether he can continue rehabilitation from a sprained left ankle in Bradenton, Fla. Dr. Lewis Yocum of California will perform the examination Wednesday. ————————————– My Take: Things aren’t looking good for Duffy. While he is still injured, Nate McLouth is tearing it up for the Pirates. With McCutchen on his way to

The Latest Penguins Buzz

The Penguins have made an official offer to defenseman Danny Markov. (2 yrs – 5.4 million) I have been told Markov is considering the offer but appears to be leaning towards returning to Russia. According to an anonymous source who comments frequently here at the Buzzontheburgh, Grossman is trying to get Markov to accept the Penguins deal and says the deal is similar to Sydor’s offer. The source also goes on to say Markov is very close to signing with Vityaz Chekhov for one year. Potential Suitors for Markov: Boston appears to be out of the picture due to cap reasons. Detroit has moved on. Eklund is reporting the Sharks are interest but my sources have said the Sharks have

Fantasy Football League Anyone???

I have done fantasy football for many years, and have run private leagues for a while too. I am starting up a fantasy football league for Buzz on the Burgh readers & bloggers. It will be on ESPN, and it will be a private keeper league. Since the season is starting very soon, we would have to get this league going very quickly. I hope to have 10-20 teams in the league. I’d like to be able to have the live online draft sometime next week (Sunday Aug. 26 at the earliest). Email me at (buzzontheburgh.Johnson@gmail.com) if you are interested in joining the league and I will send you an invite. By the way, this league will be just for

Penguins offer Markov 2 year deal?

As of 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, Ray Shero and agent Jay Grossman have had “serious” discussions regarding Danny Markov. The Penguins have not made a offer but it is believed the Penguins will offer a 2 year – 5 million deal to Danny Markov. That’s the highest they will go, i have been told. Another NHL’er bolts for Russia: Former Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Alexeev has inked a contract with Ak-Bars Kazan of the Russian super league

Kordell Stewart on Bettis Book, ect

Today, on 93.7 The Zone, radio host John Steigerwald had former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart on as a guest to discuss his time as a Steeler and the acquisitions Jerome Bettis made that Stewart was set up to fail by the Steelers coaching staff and was not used properly. Jeromes Book: Kordell was set up to fail in 2002: Kordells response: Kordell was professional in the interview and in response to that particular question, he says he respected Cowhers decision by couldn’t believe Cowher would give up on him three games into season after taking the team to the AFC Championship the year before. My Take: I did not agree with the decision at the time and i still

News and Notes around the NHL

The Latest on Danny Markov: Danny Markov to Pittsburgh is a longshot. Markovs price demands have gone down to about 2.5 – 2.8 million per season but I’ve been told Markovs agent Jay Grossman is still asking for a 3 year deal. The Penguins seem intent on going into camp with the roster they have. If talks with Markovs representatives were to get serious in the next couple days, it will be on the Penguins terms. The Penguins are very close to their self imposed cap which makes Markov signing with the Penguins highly unlikely but they do have interest if the price is right. The highest the Penguins can go is 2 years – 5 million. Forsberg Rumors: Despite

Danny Markov initiates talks with Penguins: (Rumor) Fleury turns down 3 year extension

Updated: 8:00 p.m: There has been some speculation today that Marc Andre Fleury has turned down a 3 year extension from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The deal is rumored to be identical to the contract Cam Ward signed last spring. Ward will earn $2 million in 07-08, $2.5 million in the 2008-09 season and $3.5 million in 2009-10. According to a source who covers the Wilkes Barre Penguins, Fleury was offered a 4-5 year extension that was backloaded. After almost two months, will the Penguins finally land one of their top targets in free agency? It has been confirmed from various sources that Danny Markovs’ representatives have contacted the Penguins front office to see if they are still interested in signing
