Yankee Surge

Memo to the Boston Red Sox and the American League: Here comes the Yankees!!!!…. The New York Yankees are on a roll since the All-Star break sweeping the defending champs for the first time in 4 years. With Sunday’s 6-4 victory and the athletics taking 3 out of 4 from the Red Sox the Yankees are in prime position to regain first place in the AL East. The Yanks are a half game back with a depleted roster that is getting healthy. Damon and Cano are due back next week and the possible arrival of Bobby Abreu via trade is in the works. The pitching staff is question mark heading down the stretch but Mussina and Wang have out performed Schilling and Beckett head to head. Randy Johnson who was awful the first two months of the season has been dropped to third in the rotation but as of lateRead More »

Lebron ready to bolt?

NBA superstar Lebron James declined the Cavs offer of 5yr – 80 million max contract and instead signed a 3 year extension a players option for a 4th. The extension James has signed is worth around 60 million but the main issue: is Lebron already planning to bolt Cleveland for the chance to play in a market like NewYork or LA? Three years ago Lebron signed a 5 yr 90 million shoe contract with Nike but in the clause of his contract the money in that deal doubles if he bolts for a top 3 market ( Chicago, New York, or LA). There is also similar stipulations in other endorsement deals. The city of Cleveland hasn’t had a championship team since I don’t know the Civil War and Lebron is their only hope to deliver one to a city that is in dire need of a championship. Dwayne Wade signedRead More »

American League 3 – National League 2

Michael Young’s two run triple with 2 outs in the 9th put the American League on top 3-2 and Mariano Rivera secured the American League home field in the World Series with his third save of his All Star career. The American League is now 9-0-1 in the past 10 years. Key stats: M.V.P: Mike YoungHome Runs: American League Vlad Guerrero, National League David Wright. Pirates 29-57 Vs New York Mets 50-34

Kip Wells lackluster first inning proved costly Pirates surrender 5 runs in first, lose 5-0 Orlando Hernandez (El Duque) dominated the Buccos only giving up four hits through seven innings. The Mets are now the first team in the national league to 50 wins and are in the driver seat in the NL East with a 11.5 lead in the standings. Kip Wells 0-4 12.42 era showed tonight why it’s time ( two years late) to finally send him packing. He’s been here for five years has never produced and every year we hear about how much talent he has. He has talent in the Pirates eyes not the other 29 teams in the major leagues. No wonder were on our way to watching a 14th straight losing season. I’m sure Jim Tracy will be saying tomorrow morning on how Kip turned it around after his horrendous first inning. ThisRead More »

Penguins Sign Mark Eaton

Ray Shero made his first splash in free agency signing defenseman Mark Eaton of Nashville. Eaton 6ft2 218, 29yrs old has played the last five years for Nashville Predators, signed a two yr deal worth 1.6 million per season. Eaton only recorded 3 goals last season but that is not the reason the Penguins signed him. Eaton does the little things like block shots and clear the front of the net effectively and this signing could spell the end to Josef Melichar’s Penguin career. What a shame. DePaoli’s take: This is not a surprise signing as Shero said he would take his time through free agency and not overspend for anybody. The Penguins were after Jay McKee a more established defenseman who got 4 million per year. Eaton is a similar type of defenseman and Shero got him for 1.6 million per. Sounds like a bargain to me. What might have been

Former Pittsburgh Pirate manager Jim Leyland returned to Pittsburgh for the first as a manager since 1999. His Detroit Tigers are the best team in baseball and beat the Bucco’s 7-6 in front of a decent crowd at PNC park last night. With Jimmy Leyland returning and his strong interest to manage the Pirates last winter, the question has risen about would this team be this bad with Leyland at the helm. Leyland is one of the best managers in the game and if I were running a team he would be my first pick. The guy gets the most out of his players and runs his pitching staff and bullpen extremely well. With him the Pirates wouldn’t be a playoff team but the team wouln’t have turned on him like they have on Tracy. Leyland worked as a scout for the cardinals for the past four years and wasRead More »

Penguins draft Staal in 1st round

After weeks of rumors that Penguins general manager Ray Shero would trade out of the #2 pick, Shero decided to follow his scheme to build for the future and draft the big 6ft4 center Jordan Staal which came as no surprise. So what happened to Carolina obtaining the pick and the Penguins getting Jack Johnson. There were talks between the two teams but nothing really serious as Shero wouldn’t take that trade straight up. Rumors are he asked for Andrew Ladd and the talks stalled from there. TSN Analysts Pierre McGurie on the drafting of Jordan Staal: “When you think about Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal, this is an embarrassing array of riches down the middle for the Pittsburgh Penguins. How are people going to beat these guys? How do you draw up a game plan to stop a player like Staal at 6’4″ and 215 lbs.? This teamRead More »

And The Pittsburgh Penguins select ……….

One day before the NHL and it’s a lot different for Penguins fans this time around then last year. Despite this draft being without a Crosby type player, there are still franchise caliber players in Defenseman Erik Johnson, Jordan Staal and possibly Phil Kessel. So what will the Penguins do: Keep the pick or trade the pick ? I’ll give you the answer a day before it goes down. Now to the legitimate rumors…. For the past two weeks media circuits have been reporting the Carolina Hurricanes have offered Michigan defenseman ( #3 overall pick in 2005) to the Penguins for the #2 pick to draft Jordan Staal. Part 1 – NHL Draft

The Pittsburgh Penguins hold the number 2 pick in this year’s draft and rumors of the Penguins trading the pick have already started. Defenseman Eric Johnson is the top rated player in the draft who has the potential to be the cornerstone of a franchise for years to come. After Johnson, it’s anyone’s guess on how the top 10 will fall out. Despite the fact of Eric Johnson being the concensus #1 pick, he is not the overwhelming pick like Crosby and Ovechkin of years past. Here are 5 players the Penguins have their eyes on My top 5: 1. Erik Johnson: D, 6ft4 225 18yrs old U.S. National team: Big defensemen who can do it all. Will be a All star for years to come. Type of Player he resembles ( Rob Blake 2.
