KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Jan. 10) – The Vulcans won nine events, including six with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times, but suffered a 133-129 loss to Kutztown University on Saturday.
The California University of Pennsylvania swimming team swept the two relay events and added individual victories in seven events. Freshmen Melissa Gates (Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley), Marianne Juhl (Virum, Denmark/Caspar Henriksen) and Katie Matuszewski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) each led the Vulcans with two individual wins.
Cal U opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay when senior Lea Mastascusa (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), senior April Staniszewski (South Park, Pa./South Park), Matuszewski and newcomer Teresa Hernandez-Verdu posted a time of 1 minute, 53.20 seconds.
Juhl claimed a first-place finish and PSAC cut with a time of 10:49.53 in the 1000 freestyle. She added her second win of the meet in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:21.43, winning the event by over three seconds.
Matuszewski earned her first individual win of the meet in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 59.40 seconds. The Montour graduate added a first-place finish in the 50 butterfly with a time of 27.23 seconds.
Gates posted wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle with PSAC qualifying times in both events. In the 50 freestyle, she finished with a time of 24.82 seconds before touching the wall in 54.71 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
The Vulcans posted a win in the 400 freestyle relay when the team of Hernandez-Verdu, Matuszewski, sophomore Lauren Arnold (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) and Gates finished with a time of 3:43.19.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it faces Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va., at 2 p.m.
