SAVANNAH, Ga. (March 13) – Behind complete-game performances by veteran pitchers senior Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle Antrim) and redshirt sophomore Randy Sturgill (Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg), the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept its opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West doubleheader with Slippery Rock on Saturday, winning 8-4 and 8-3.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improved to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in league play. Meanwhile, The Rock fall to 6-8 overall this season and 0-2 in divisional action.
Cal U claimed an 8-4 victory in Game 1 behind a six-run fourth inning and Sturgill registered eight strikeouts in his third complete game of the season. Sophomore center fielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) collected a pair of hits and scored two runs, while junior second baseman Aaron Ordy (Butler, Pa./Butler) posted a pair of RBI. Junior first baseman Adam Links (New Hope, Pa./Central Bucks East) also delivered a key three-run double against Slippery Rock.
In the nightcap, Schreiber allowed three runs in 7.0 innings with four strikeouts in the 8-3 win. Junior transfer Eric Berringer (Damascus, Md./Damascus) finished with a pair of hits, including a solo homer, and three RBI. Links and senior right fielder Sam DiMatteo (Center, Pa./Center) both added two hits in the victory with Links also collecting three RBI.
,div> The Vulcans are scheduled to close their series against The Rock with a doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, March 14, at the Savannah Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
