The Washington Capitals made a strange signing today. The Capitals have signed 6 foot-7 website producer Brett Leonhardt who played Division III ice hockey in college, to an amateur tryout contract, prior to Friday’s game. Leonhardt, 26, played two years for Oswego State University in New York and two years for Neumann College in Pennsylvania.
Leonhardt currently works for the Capitals as one of their website producers and they needed a goalie on short notice when Jose Theodore went down with an injury this morning. The team planned to call up AHL goaltender Simeon Varlamov but he could not make it in time for the game. Instead the Capitals recieved special permission to dress three goaltenders. Leonhardt will serve as Brent Johnson’s backup until Varlamov makes it to the arena.
