Insider Only Cole allows 8 hits, 5 ER in 5-4 loss to Cardinals

  • Gerrit Cole on the mound in the 7th inning with a 4-2 lead, the Pirates were in great position to take game one of the three game series, but Cole could not get out of the inning as Kolten Wong hit a pinch hit 2-run homer off Cole to tie the game at 4-4. It was a huge turning point in the game as Cole then allowed a triple to John Jay and was pulled going 6 1/3 innings. John Axford replaced Cole and Matt Holliday would single in Jay to give the Cardinals 5-4 lead. Cole allowed 8 hits, 5 earned runs, while striking out 4 and walking 3.
