Penguins complete deal with Panthers
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers have worked through some complications in completing the Patric Hornqvist trade, the team officially announced. In the deal, the Penguins have acquired defenseman Mike Matheson and forward Colton Sceviour from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Patric Hornqvist.
Matheson carries a big term, signed through the 2025-26 season and with an AAV of $4.875 million. Sceviour’s deal runs through the 2020-21 campaign and carries an AAV of $1.2 million.
Rutherford in a statement called it a difficult decision to trade Hornqvist.
“First, this was a difficult decision to say goodbye to a terrific person and player in Patric,” said Rutherford. “He was a huge part of our success over the last six seasons, including back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
On Mike Matheson, Rutherford says “Mike is a young, skilled defenseman with great offensive instincts who plays with speed and has a good shot, while Colton is a solid veteran player who has a lot of experience on the penalty kill.”

To be Fair yes malkin was a no show,,,but had a bad elbow Crosby did have 4 points in 4 games but had a bad wrist.
We lost because our defense sucks…period Johnson Schultz Pettersson were exposed down low and by montreaal’s sped…Dumoulin wasn’t his normal steady self, letang is always a turnover away and Marino had some struggles…if we don’t fix our defense we are done..

I am holding judgement on MM play bc of where he is coming from. He does have a lot of upside and with the right coaching and pairing he could be a good addition to the back end. I love Hornqvist, he is a personal fav, but lets face it, his contract was terrible and he can not stay healthy anymore. Too many concussions. Hooks Orpik brings up some interesting points on Pensburgh. When this was announced I reacted much the same way you have here. I loved Hornqvist, he’ll always be a favourite of mine.
The return seems piss poor on the surface, I’m not sure that deal will ever feel right from a term perspective. Still, there are some parallels to how Nisky came over. Dudes got some mobility, he definitely needs to work on the turnovers, he seemed to have a lot to like about his game a few years back. Hopefully deployment factors
Agreed he is 26, he has speed, can really skate, and has a shot un like letang. Todd Reirdan will be working with the defenseman hopefully he can squeeze that talent out…

i am happy for hornqvist. it’s good that he is getting out of here. he is definitely on the pens all time team in their history. he had the biggest heart and gave more effort and cared more than possibly any player in pens history. he scored in both cup clinching games and he did it all with pure will and determination and very limited skill. in the future he needs to have a penguin award named after him for the player who plays with the most heart and determination. pens just keep getting lamer by the day and he… Read more »
agree 100% about Horny, MM, and Rutherford needs to slow down now. He needs to maximize Murray and possibly Mccann with the upcoming draft and free agency period coming..
coach gave sheary 18 mins per night in the playoffs and hornqvist got 12. sullivan is the worst. pens have zero chance with him behind the bench.
2 for 1 is worth it considering Hornqvist was gaining any value and it gives more trade options going forward. Move JJ with Murray and if Matheson gets his game back it’ll be fine.
