Sports has taken a back seat today to the historic moment for the United States last night, when President Barack Obama announced that Navy Seals killed terrorist Osama Bin Laden, the architect of the 9/11 Attacks and several other terrorist attacks around the world.
There was a 10 year man hunt for Bin Laden and the killing was celebrated by Americans all over the US and viewed as justice finally being done for the thousands who lost their lives.
Meanwhile, Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall appears to be one of the few pro athletes (likely the only one) to come out and speak favorably of Osama Bin Laden. Comments from Mendenhall that will surely come under fire for the young running back.
“What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side, ” Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall said on twitter today.
“We’ll never know what really happened, ” Mendenhall said in response to a tweet from dkeller23 who said he’s not convinced Bin Laden was behind the attacks. “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style, ” Mendenhall said.
Mendenhall has been known for controversial comments this off-season. He weighed in on March agreeing with Adrian Peterson that slavery and the NFL lockout at two parallel.
“Anyone with knowledge of the slave trade and the NFL could say that these two parallel each other, ” Mendenhall said on twitter (March 16, 2011). {Adrian Peterson} “is correct in his analogy of this game. It is a lot deeper than people understand, ” Mendenhall said.
