GAME 2: Penguins – Islanders What We Learned
Tristan Jarry bounced back in a big way in Game 2 with a 37 save performance in leading the Penguins to a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night to even the best-of-seven series at 1-1. In Game 1, Jarry made the tough saves, but was plagued by a number of leaky goals. A goaltender mirrored with inconsistent play for much of this season, it wasn’t shocking to see him bounce back in Game 2.
“I thought Tristan had a great game,” said Mike Sullivan. He’s done that for us for most of this year. He’s been a big part of the success that this team has enjoyed to this point.”
— Most positive sign for the Penguins in the win —
They closed out the win by going back to the blueprint of what got them here this season. Pittsburgh came out flying again, got the Islanders on their heels and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead in period one. The second period, though, saw a similar trend in how the Penguins became less and less threatening and momentum started to swing into the Islanders direction.
In period three, Pittsburgh got back to playing a fast, systematic style in all three zones. They didn’t sit back, but they defended in layers in the third with speed and structure. In Game 1, the Islanders dictated the flow of play from late in the second period on through overtime. In Game 2, the Penguins were able to get it back by going back to their blueprint.
— A healthy Brian Dumoulin is more important to the Penguins chances of winning this series than having Evgeni Malkin —
— Forechecking Dominance in the Game 2 Win: —
Sidney Crosby is on just another level right now in how methodical he is as a forechecker and what a night for the Blueger line in causing the Islanders fits below the dots with pressure and smarts on the forecheck.

With that shutout, Fleury passed Darcy Kuemper and Michael Leighton in career playoff save percentage! Wow!
He has played so well for Vegas this year in the playoffs….good for Fluery !
Only this year ? He took that AHL team to the finals when he first joined them. And they will win this year
AHL team?! Lol!!!
Karlsson 78 points
Marchessault 75 points
Perron 66 points
Smith 60 points
Havla 55 points
Neal 44 points
Miller 41 points
Tuch 37 points….
Even Malcom Subban had a good record going 13-4.
What an AHL team!!!
The highest scoring player on Montreal that year was Brendan Gallagher with 54 points.
Hey npl what’s LGBTQ.

Fleury passes Osgood for 3rd most shutouts in the playoffs 16. he is 3rd in all time behind Roy 23 and brodeur 24. If only MAF didn’t play under that circus system of DB
P.S npl sucks
So does his kind
It helps when Letang is not screening you by pushing players into you.
Also helps when he doesnt have dumb players that took turns taking dumb penalties Cooke, Neil,Malkin, orpig
Now go bake your donuts
Add Letang to that list. Grow some balls and acknowledge he is a terrible defender. And Brooks bailed Fluery and Letang out more times then I care to remember.
What is baffling is he has so much talent and yet sometimes looks so lost… Overall, he had a bit better year this year but is one brain cramp away from killing us in a series. Too many turnovers, he coughs the puck up with a little pressure, and he has lost a step, he just needs to be smarter. I go nuts when I see him out near the point in the defensive zone or in the same corner as his defensive partner and the net is left uncovered.. yikes.. Lets hope we get more good Letang than the… Read more »
You are right npl Fleury Suckss.
Go fuckinn suck a hot dog you fat fuckk
Tristan Jarry has been solid for the most part but giving up 4 goals a game… Any thoughts of Maxime Legace getting one start he was good in his last start….
Thoughts? Is De Smith out still?
DeSmith is still hurt. Game one was on Jarry, game four was not. If he looks bad in game 5 then out Legacy in. DeSmith is not the answer. The team left him out to dry today.
Oh ok cool thanks…..
I think they may go Jarry, Legacy, and Jarry if it goes 7 !
Maybe just is just me but I think McDavid will have to leave Edmonton to become an all time great… He is the fastest and most dynamic player in the NHL but he doesn’t make players around him better like the great ones do. I think McKinnon and Matthews are just as good as McDavid and Sid is the best 200foot player in the game.. Until McKinnon, Matthews and McDavid win some playoffs series and some Cups they won’t be ultra great like Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane, Patrick Roy, Nick Lidstrom, Stevie Y, Larry Robinson, Martin Brodeaur. Don’t see it in… Read more »
Edmonton is certainly not consistently putting a great team around him. That is not his fault but I don’t see him lifting up his team or players around him.
Sid made Colby Armstrong, Pascual Dupris, and Chris Kunitz relevant and cup champs. Imagine if Sid had a Draisatel, Kurri, someone like that..
Malkin doesn’t count because they rarely play together..
Either McDavid or Leon will not finish their careers in Edmonton. One of them will want out eventually. I think it will be Leon. On almost any other team he is a first line center. McDavid, like Lebron James, needs great players around him to win. He does not make average players better. I don’t care how many points you rack up, the best Centers play a full 200 foot game and help elevate other players.
I couldn’t agree more well said the great ones like Lemieux, like Gretzky, like Crosby make average players better.
Lemieux made Young & Brown a household names…..
Malkin as good as he can be doesn’t elevate the players around him..
McDavid’s Oilers collapse and blow a 4 – 1 lead with 9 minutes to go and fall behind 3 games to zero to Winnipeg…
They play again tomorrow and McDavid could Join Ovechkin, Tarasenko on the outs…
Why don’t they move Marino with Dumo, then Ceci/Matheson at # , then Pettersson/Letangat # 3 and send him a message ??
# 2 sorry.
Because Letang can do no wrong. Just like how Malkin should be on the second PP unit and McCann should be on the first. Super Star privilege.
Seems your right ! Look Letang should be moved down and his minutes cut. If he is on second power play or not at all and off the PK he would be better at 18 minutes a game not 26…
How was Tristan Jarry play today?
Do you think they protect Mccann in the expansion draft ?
He only has one year left on his contract after this season. I think it depends on how this season ends and if Sully is shown the door. He is not being used correctly on the PP.
I didn’t see the game how did Tristan Jarry play? Sounds like Malkin and Letang did not put their best foot forward.!
Two of the four goals were not his fault. Letang pushed one of the Isle’s into Jarry causing a goal and one was knocked in by Blueger. The one off CC’s foot was puck luck. The team just looked out of sync and the Isle’s were all over them.
Well we got the split now we have two of the final three at PPG we nee to battle..
I didn’t see the game but we got a split and regained home Ice. We have 2 of the next three at PPG PAINTS ARENA where we play some good hockey…. Lets see if we can take advantage of that…
And Letang strikes again!
Good job Tanger.
Yes Mr agenda. Keep drooling over malkins cockk
Apparently he is having an amazing game in case you haven’t turned your TV off yet since team is down 2-0
You are as transparent as Letang’s defense. That first goal was all on Letang. Malkin looks like shitt but I will admit he looks like shitt…Funny part is that second penalty could have went to Geno or Letang. You have French Canadian jizz all over your face. Letang can do no wrong in your eyes bc he is French Canadian. You are not fooling anyone. So predictable.
Our Russian is on fire today
Making sure the penalty bench is warm
MAF was the BEST at that.
The Tampa Bay Circumvention are looking good!
Npl’s favorite news anchorman Don Lemon quitting .
I guess Don is leaving because he completed his anti Trump lies for CNN and he cant lie about Biden because Biden’s an expert on lies so no news report.
He can now join Ellen
Kadri gets 8 games, Wilson gets a parking ticket.
Yeah, the Wilson “punishment” was a joke, but kadri Kadri isa perpetual scumbag as well. I don’t think it will matter for them, though.
Go Figure….
Malkin despite limited ice time 2 assists and made Jeff Carter better. Carter can center line three and be on the power paly with Malkin….
Malkin locked happy and engaged last night. If that Malkin plays consistent the Penguins are a much better team.
He was also -1 in that little time imagine he played more
McDavid had 5 points against Ottawa and was still a -1. What is your point? Did they win? Yes. Did he help them win? Yes. Go away.
Mcdavid played 12 minutes that game ?
Go make some donuts
If you score 5 points against Ottawa and end up a -1 you are a terrible two way player. There is no possible way to argue against it! You know, Ottawa, the team Fraud Price had a hard time with.
I would still rather see Malkin on the second PP unit with Kap, makes the second unit more dangerous.
McDavid shut down…..
Again!
Penguins are playing fast, their forecheck has caused New York problems, and they are controlling the nuetral zone better….
Penguins found away to get a game in New York they need to keep pushing hard…
Jarry looked ok he sure was bumped around alot….
Sid again proves why he is the best 200 foot player in the nhl ! What a diving / sprawling block of a potential goal with 335 left….
Good win !! We have 10 goals in 3 games when we got 3 in a 4 game sweep loss in 2019.. There is some hope.
from an islanders article in the athletic. weird to see these sentences from the other side of the ledger: What set the Islanders off on the wrong skate yet again in Game 3 was their inability to break through the Penguins’ forecheck/neutral-zone clog. At times the Isles defensemen could barely get the puck past their own hash marks.
You can definitely tell they are getting frustrated. They just don’t have the skill to compete with the Pens and when it’s showing on the scoreboard, they get frustrated. The Pens responding after seemingly every Islanders goal is putting them right back on edge and killing any type of momentum they got through physicality or on the scoreboard.
Well said….
I see that nothing has changed here.
That was a nasty knee to the head from Perry on Tavares. Very scary but by no means intentional. Interesting that Foligno fought him.
Npl’s favorite channel CNN should change to BLM. All they talk about black racism. Led by that clown don lemon
Those Filthy DemocRATS are doing everything to divide the country
Pens won tonight. Did you know?
True on Lemon, but Hannity has his head so far up Trumps ass it’s funny/but sad.
And that bitch Laura Ingram she is a joke too…what a cocky little ******.She criticizes CNN all the time yet she used to work for them….
All networks should/need to report news not be the news…
There is no such thing as unbiased journalism anymore. Every “news” channel leans one way or another depending on who lines their pockets. Fox, CNN, even ESPN has an agenda. It’s actually very sad and pathetic.
Our Russian had 2 points and still managed to be -1
Jeff “he’s no Sam Bennett” Carter is fn awesome
12 Goals in 17 games. That’s a 58 goal pace. Marleau never came close to that.
Both have been great pick ups for their teams….
Wow this site still alive.
Where is Ron klatt
Picking on old ladies last I seen on some Edmonton site. Didnt see you in league this year.
I didnt play this year due to covid year wasn’t fun for poolers games get canceled and everything
I think Ron klatt is drooling over mcdavids jock strap
Agree the covid cancelations was a major pain.
Hi CBauer!
Calling it now, 71 with the GWG.
Start drooling
I’ll take it. Now watch your hand lose like the pabs they are.
This is nuckin’ futs!!
Zucker sighting!
I heard the Pens traded for him.
Pens look terrible in the second.
Can the NHL just mic up Tanev and turn all the other noise and broadcast feeds off? That alone would be amazing.
Geno back tonight
That certainly will help…. we hope !
For how long ?
Go watch fraud Price.
Apparently he has done a good job against fraud Matthews
Matthews led the NHL in goals. Although he wouldn’t fit montreal’s 0c model.
Sullivan on that up and coming rangers team would be dangerous
If the Pens get knocked out of the first round that is exactly where he will end up.
Wow interesting thought you could be right.. If that is the case which I hope doesn’t happen (I like Sully ) who do/would you see as the next Penguins coach?
All depends on how this season plays out and who Hex/Burk want as “their” guy. I do not want to see Sully go but Tocchet would be interesting.
tocchet would be interesting. plus they could get phil back….hahaha – j/k though a certain poster’s head would explode if that were to happen
Rod Brind’Amour has yet to be resigned by Carolina and Gallant is still out there. Maybe Tortz… lol!!!
I think he stays in Carolina…. He has alot of history there as a player and a successful coach.
Another good choice though..
I agree but he will still be available until they resign him.
I do not want to see Sully go either..Tocchet would be a solid choice with obvious Pittsburgh connections… I think Sid, Geno, and Tanger would be behind that. He may be the one guy to get more out of Malkin….
Thought I saw Tocchet linked to them.
D you forgot to write
What we learned in game 2 Malkin is still on vacation mode
Malkin is due back as you say from his vacation tonight…LOL
Any news on Ron Klatt. Is he alive
Scary that I am agreeing with tbj233 but that score could have been 3, 4 possibly 5 – 1. I think this will go seven games not sure who wins history favors the islanders…we are 1 – 4 in lifetime playoffs vs them.
The good news is we got swept in 2019 and only scored 3 goals. We are tied 1 – 1 and have scored 5 goals so there is hope… If we play desperate and pay attention to details…..like being patient, staying away from stupid penalties, and making good on most power plays we have a chance.
Sadly, Isles in 6.
At least they won’t get swept like last time
The Pens got extremely unlucky in certain ways. They had some chances in the third where Varlamov stopped the puck solely by accident.
Must be puck luck just like npl always says
There’s a degree of puck luck in every game. Anyone with any type of functional brain can gather as much.
Montreal has had no puck luck since 1993.
