The Pirates suffered a 9-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon and it was revealed afterwards that Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.64 ERA) will miss his next start and could be a candidate for the disabled list.
Cole will be sidelined for his next start due to what the team is calling shoulder fatigue. Right now he is being held out for “precautionary reasons” but it’s not being ruled out that he could end up on the DL. It is believed he had an MRI.
“You want to make sure you protecting a guy so the conversation is being had,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
Per Travis Sawchik, Cole’s velocity dipped consistently in his last inning vs San Diego where it dropped to 91. Cole pitched a 196 combined innings last season and this season has thrown 76 2/3 innings.
2013 All-Star Jeff Locke will start Sunday. Locke is 3-1 with a 4.09 in nine starts this season with Triple-A Indianapolis.
