Pittsburgh 70 - Eastern Kentucky 61
Ashton Gibbs scored 20 points and freshman Nasir Robinson added 15 points as the Pittsburgh Panthers pulled away in the second half, defeating Eastern Kentucky 70-61 Thursday night at the Petersen Events Center.
The win was Pitt's 41st consecutive home-court victory against non-conference opponents, two off the school record. Pitt is 69-1 against non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center.
Head coach Jamie Dixon stressed after Pitt's win against Binghamton on Tuesday night that the team would get back to the basics and improve their rebounding after out-rebounding Binghamton by only 6.
Pitt did exactly that against Eastern Kentucky as freshman Dante Taylor led the Panthers with 12 rebounds and the Panthers outrebounded Eastern Kentucky 47-25.
“Our guys came out and responded to challenges we gave them in practice, " head coach Jamie Dixon said. "Last game, it was moving the ball and tonight it was rebounding."
Taylor had a quiet night offensively scoring only 5 points but he controlled the boards and added 4 blocked shots.
Pitt played an aggressive defensive game and had 12 total blocked shots. Gary McGhee matched Taylor with 4 blocked shots.
Freshman Lamar Patterson had a strong game scoring 10 points in 19 minutes played. Patterson was 2-4 from three point range.
“I had some good open shots, so I took them. I just wanted to step up for my team and bring energy to the floor. We just need to continue to rebound better, play better defense and continue to improve for every game.â€
