Hampton mulling offer before Thursday's 4:00 p.m. deadline

There has been some thought that the Steelers shouldn't even be negotiating with nose tackle Casey Hampton due to Hampton's age and the potential of a lockout in 2011. According to some, the only option should be to franchise Hampton in 2010.

However, the Steelers have stayed true to their word and according to a source close to Hampton, the Steelers have tendered a surprise offer that Hampton is mulling before Thursday's 4:00 p.m. franchise tag deadline.

The Steelers are believed to have approached Hampton's camp about a front loaded deal in years one ($7 million guaranteed) and two ($5 million guaranteed), worth close to $12 million guaranteed. A deal that would have a low cap hit in years three, beyond (If Salary Cap is in new CBA), which I'm told is a sticking point for Hampton's camp as the Steelers would easily be able to get out of the contract after year two.

However, the two sides are progressing towards a deal before tomorrow's deadline I'm told.

Classy move like always. Even if they would get out of it after two years he would have collected a minimum of $12mm on top of bonuses, base salary, etc. Pretty good offer IMO.

In all honesty though....that sounds like a decent deal for both parties. If we lose Hampton this year..there is a hole there. This gives us time to groom someone to be his replacement in a couple years.

Raiders tagging Seymour is yet another moronic move on their part, and I would think Hampton's price could be on the rise again.

Hampton and Seymour play two different positions. The Raiders had to keep him considering what they gave up.

Hampton is a DT, Seymour is a DT. Raiders should have cut their losses at a likely top ten pick in 2011 draft, not added to them with a large contract offer for a DT on the downside of his career.

I'm aware of the differences in schemes positionally, Jeffed, but in regards to franchise tags, they play the same position. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

@ Deesh - I see what your saying about them even bothering with Seymour but that's the Raiders, don't try to figure them out. Seymour should be added to a team that thinks they have a chance but no one understands how Al Davis operates. As far as franchise numbers go Seymour is a DE and he'll get $12.398m and Hampton is a DT and he'll get $7.003m if he is indeed tagged. I personally think the tag will still happen since the deadline is so close then work out a deal IMO.

@ Jeffed- I was under the impression that the Raiders were a 4-3 team, with Seymour being a DT in their system. I'm aware that he was a DE in New England, but he was drafted out of Georgia as a 4-3 DT (alongside Marcus Stroud) so I figured he would revert back to that in another 4-3 system. Therefore making him a DT like Hampton. It's my bad if he actually played DE in the Raider's 4-3 defense.
