LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (April 5) – For the second time this season, California University of Pennsylvania sophomore outfielder Troy Handza (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Hitter of the Week on Monday.
Handza hit .536 (9-for-16) in six games last week, helping the Vulcans go 6-0 following a doubleheader sweep at Clarion and a four-game season sweep of Fairmont State. The 6-3 center fielder collected four doubles and one homer with seven runs scored, nine RBI and five steals. He also posted a .667 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage from the leadoff spot in the order.
He opened the week with a RBI single, walk and steal in a 6-0 victory at Clarion. In the nightcap against the Golden Eagles, Handza reached base four times (two walks, two hit by pitch), scored three runs and had a RBI sacrifice fly to help the Vulcans sweep the twinbill.
In the first game of the Fairmont State series, he hit a leadoff homer and later added a pair of two-run doubles to finish the game 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs and two steals. The former Shaler standout added a RBI double, steal and walk in the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader. In the third game of the series, he went 3-for-4 with a RBI double, one run and one steal before finishing with a single in the final game of the week.
Handza leads Cal U in several offensive categories this season, including hits (44), runs scored (34), homers (seven) and RBI (38). He also ranks third in the PSAC this year with 21 stolen bases and a .721 slugging percentage.
Handza and the Vulcans (19-10, 10-2) return to the diamond this weekend with a four-game conference series against Gannon, beginning Friday, April 9.
