Evgeni Malkin has been officially ruled for tonight’s game vs the Ottawa Senators, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced this evening at his pre-game media session. Sullivan also said Malkin will not play tomorrow night vs the Toronto Maple Leafs, saying he believes for now the injury is “short-term”.

Sullivan would not divulge the specific area of injury but two sources told Inside Pittsburgh Sports prior to Sullivan’s media availability that Malkin is dealing with ‘significant’ swelling in his hand that prompted the team to send Malkin for some imaging early Thursday afternoon. The good news is scans on Thursday showed no broken bone, per sources, but the team isn’t 100 percent certain yet of how long Malkin will be sidelined. Further evaluation is planned in a few days once the swelling subsides.
