The Pittsburgh Penguins did not make a move before Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. trade freeze and we’re not close to any.

The team, though, has a new goaltending coach.

Mike Bales is out and Mike Buckley is in as the Penguins goaltending coach, the team announced on Saturday.

Now that the Penguins are parting ways with Marc Andre Fleury this coming week, Bales too close of a relationship with Fleury that led to an awkward relationship with Matt Murray, cost the now former Penguins goaltending coach his job.

Bales was informed Thursday morning by Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan and GM Jim Rutherford he was being let-go as the goaltending coach with the NHL club.

Pittsburgh offered Bales development coach role with Wilkes Barre and Wheeling (they knew he would decline) but this was essentially a firing of Bales.

“We are excited to have Mike Buckley join the Pittsburgh staff,” general manager Jim Rutherford said in a press release. “He has tutored our young goalies, especially Matt Murray, for a number of years, making this a seamless transition for our group. We certainly appreciate the contributions from Mike Bales throughout his time with our club. He was invaluable to our team, and especially our goaltenders, during our Stanley Cup runs the past two.”

Bales quickly found work and was named today the Carolina Hurricanes new goaltending coach.
