The Pittsburgh Penguins have promoted defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a full-time assistant coach.

Gonchar will oversee games from the press box, similar to a role Jacques Martin had a few seasons ago.

Gonchar will also work extensively with the defenseman and be involved with special teams.

“He will naturally transition into a full-time coaching role, building on the experiences and relationships he has already made with our group,” head coach Mike Sullivan said in a release. “He was invaluable during the playoffs, especially in working with our young defensemen.”
