Penguins 5 – Flyers 4 (OT)

Bryan Rust (13) scored at 2:25 of overtime to deliver a 5-4 Penguins (43-27-6, 92 pts) win over the Philadelphia Flyers (38-25-13, 89 pts) on Sunday afternoon. Rust 13th of the season came off a beautiful feed from Sidney Crosby who owned the Flyers in the third period and into overtime.
Crosby scored another sensational goal in this one, 17 seconds into the third period for his 26th of the season to put the Penguins ahead 4-3. Crosby took over the game in the third but the Penguins couldn’t put the Flyers away as Sean Couturier (31) with the goalie pulled forced overtime in scoring with 43 seconds left in regulation as Kris Letang lost his man in front.
As bad as the Penguins were outplayed today in stretches, this one was setting up for Crosby, who early in the third period scored his 38th career goal against the Flyers, to play a big part in finishing off the Flyers and he did in Overtime with the setup to Rust on the game winning marker.
Crosby who has seen his goal total dip significantly this season, now has goals in three straight games and is in range of becoming the third Penguin to get to 30 goals this season.
Evgeni Malkin (42), Patric Hornqvist (24, PPG), Derick Brassard (21) also scored for the Penguins in the win. Justin Schultz had three assists, while Brassard’s breakaway goal in the first period extended his points streak to six games.
It won’t be a fun a film study for the Penguins who were a disaster in their own end. Philadelphia outshot the Penguins 45-28 in regulation and throughout the game you could see the frustration on Mike Sullivan’s face.
Matt Murray stopped 41 of 45 saves. He has some brilliant stops but also let in a couple shaky goals. The play in front of him defensively, though, was awful in a lot of areas. Pittsburgh was given the Flyers the blueline at ease and there was way too much standing around in the net-front area.

Second place is about as high as the Pens will get in the Metro. Washington has all but locked up first place.
So I just noticed this stat but aside wins and loses Raanta has a better GAA and Save % then Murray. Arizona is the second worst team in the league and are a -52 in DIFF. Murray has only played two more games then Raanta.
Pens should trade for him straight up this off season… his success up to this year should make up for the stat gap

Pens need a third line center

I never liked him with Kessel. Kessel’s play dropped off measurably after the trade in my opinion.
Pens need and deserve a long summer rest. Trade Letang for youth and try to make one more run in next few years.

You’d have to think we could get a first for him. Carlson is also a FA this year and he’s a but younger. Move Letang and trade for/sign a top 4. You get younger, improve the d and hopefully get something in the pipeline.
Turnout the lights. Can’t complain, back to back cups but man, did the brassard trade really screw up a team that seemed to be finding its identity. GMJR missed badly on that one
It’s not even that I think he’s playing bad, but it’s hard to argue with results. He always looked really solid bad there and was making very little. You can definitely tell our D lost stability.
There was nothing wrong with the third line. Brassard was not needed. More D depth and a real backup goalie was needed. They have AHL players to bring up for wingers if needed, they have no solid defensemen if someone gones down and it is almost certain Murray will get injured in the playoffs. Just ram into him and he is done.
No he wasn’t really neede$ but he also had points in 6 games. Hard to still point fingers at the one move. Unless we are really convinced the loss of the 6th D a 6 min a night wing who wasn’t gonna play in the post season is a legit reason for them to come unravelled. Not saying there is no impact it’s just sad it seems as substantial

So many breakdowns. Our offense was also very poor through most of the game. At this point, I’m just hoping we get a first round matchup that isn’t the lightning and flip a switch on the 11th.

Murray has played a couple games now since returning from a concussion… he was looking real good after returning from his fathers death until the injury. He has not has a handful of games to work through his return but it’s had to call a guy who showed flashes of what he’s done for two cup runs in Jan and Feb a fraud no? Murray’s weak glove hand has been an issue since he arrived in the pros. Nothing to do with recent injuries and/or loss of his dad.
Glove didn’t look so bad while he was on. It’s a weakness so when he’s off it will be exposed… team 7-2-2 in their last 11 so I don’t think the sky is falling yet! While they definitely needed to tighten as a team rumours of their elimination are a little overstated
