Jonathan Sanchez earns starting rotation spot

LHP Jonathan Sanchez was informed this morning that he’s made the team and will open the season in the starting rotation, according to Michael Sanserino of the Post-Gazette. The Pirates had to make a decision on Sanchez today or release him. The team has the same decision to make on utility infielder Brandon Inge who was also in camp on a minor league deal.
The Pirates final rotation spot will be coming down to Jeff Locke, Jeanmar Gomez or Kyle McPherson.
RHP Jeff Karstens enters the season dealing with shoulder issues and has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit league game as his struggles to stay healthy continue.
LHP Francisco Liriano is considered to be three to four weeks away from joining the Pirates rotation. Liriano suffered a severe fracture to his non-throwing arm in late December.
