STEELERS OTA’S
Defensive Coordinator Keith Butler today spoke for the first time in a media gathering since being named defensive coordinator back in January.
“I really appreciate the opportunity the Rooney’s have given me…..Mike has given me,” Butler said. “I appreciate the opportunity.”
Despite the Steelers not winning a playoff game since the 2010, Butler today cited the chance to win Super Bowls is why he stayed put in years past when he had opportunities to join the Colts, Cardinals among others as defensive coordinator.
Butler also said working for Mike Tomlin is another reason he patiently waited for his time.
“Mike Tomlin is a great guy to work for,” Butler said.
Butler mentioned the front-seven being critical to the Steelers success this season, naming Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt, but when it comes to the secondary, the Steelers won’t really know what they have until you start playing games.
One area Butler, Steelers coaches feel that helps everyday is practicing against an offense as talented as the Steelers are.
“Until you start playing games, you really don’t know how good of a team you got,” Butler said. “How good is your secondary? What can you do with your secondary? “Best thing for us right now, we’re practicing against one of the premier offenses in the league. Going against them everyday is only going to make us better.”
