Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has been officially ruled out for the rest of the regular season and will have surgery for a herniated disc in his neck.
The injury will sideline Letang for up to 4 to 6 months.
“Kris underwent an MRI in February that revealed a herniated disc in his neck,” General Manager Jim Rutherford said in a released statement. “Our neurosurgeons examined him and recommended conservative treatment in an attempt to correct the condition without surgery. Kris had been making progress and was hopeful of returning for the playoffs until about a week ago, when the progress plateaued. He underwent another MRI, and, at that point it was determined that surgery was needed.”[/hide]

PIT record without Letang since 2/21 had no regulation wins over playoff teams until CBJ last game and was littered with non playoff teams.
In fairness the team had also been missing Malkin, Maatta, Daley, Hainsey, Streit, Sheary, Rust, Hagelin, Hornqvist, Cullen, Guentzel and feel free to add if there was anyone else through parts of that period. Malkin through most of that. Again I am not saying the Letang injury is not a big deal but these stats also ignore the fact that some other major players missed time
Pens can still beat Columbus without Letang, Washington may be another story though.

Agreed although I would keep my fingers crossed that the usual suspects pull no shows and that the Pens team speed is still too much for them.
I just remember how hard it was to get through ONE game without Letang last year – and I think the Caps are better this year. What I do hope is that they somehow have to play Boston, becaue I think the Bruins can give them a series. If Ottawa falls to that final WC spot, it might be a 5 games series and they waltz in, waiting to play us after a potential bloodbath with C-bus.

I think Toronto has alot of speed and scoring depth that could cause some problems.
And a bunch of rookies that have never played a playoff game. Thats a big deal. They will have energy sure but there is a learning curve.

I thought Daley stepped up in a big way and they won Letangs missing night. In this we know he isnt coming back so significant adjustments can be made to play D by committee with no worries of having to adjust again when he returns. It’s a devastating injury yes, the odds just sky-rocketd however no shot I think is extreme. Unlikely but we have seen worse teams top to bottom win without a Letang type (thinking Carolina) and the Pens do have 7 quality NHL caliber blueliners as long as they return from injury in time for the post season.

With Letang’s history and hindsight being 20/20 makes me wonder why they didn’t try harder for Shattenkirk.
Shattenkirk isn’t that kind of defenseman, like he wouldn’t be able to eat those minutes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean i dsagree with you.
Shattenkirk is more quality than the quantity of D we traded for. Who knows maybe they can win with defense by committee?
I don’t disagree – but WITH Shattenkirk, and without Letang, they’re still missing a minutes eater that can play both ends. Shattenkirk is pedestrian in his own end at best. Situationally, you’re still yanking him off the ice when you have a d-zone start that matters.
I wouldn’t want to run out shatternkirk vs top lines every night, not quite the same level as letang.
