Dirty hit by Scuderi?
2:05 p.m. - LA Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi delivered a punishing hip check on Columbus Blue Jackets winger Jason Chimera last night in LA's 6-2 win over Columbus.
Scuderi did not receive a penalty on the play but the hip check is the talk of the hockey world today. Some believe the hit was too low and deserves a suspension. Scuderi though is not a dirty play and will likely not get suspended.
Broncos sign punter Mitch Berger
1:57 p.m. - What are they thinking? The 6-0 Denver Broncos announced that punter Brett Kern has been waived, and that the team has signed former Steelers punter Mitch Berger. The Broncos meet the Steelers in week 9 for a Monday night showdown in Denver.
McCutchen named rookie of the year by Baseball America
10:45 a.m. - Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been named 2009 Major League Rookie of the Year by Baseball America.
McCutchen, 23, hit .286 with 26 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs, 54 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 108 games with Pittsburgh after joining the club on June 4.
He led all National League rookies with 47 extra-base hits and ranked second among N.L. rookies in multi-hit games (36), runs, walks and total bases (204). In addition, he ranked third in RBI, third in stolen bases, third in slugging percentage (.471), third in doubles, fifth in batting and fourth in on-base percentage among N.L. rookies.
Clark named Big 10 offensive player of the week
10:03 a.m. - Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark completed 16 of 27 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns in Penn State's 35-10 victory over Michigan.
Clark was named Big Ten offensive player of the week today for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career.
Pitt safety earns Big East honors
10:00 a.m. - Pitt safety Dom DeCicco was named Big East defensive player of the week today. DeCicco had 10 tackles in Pitt's 41-14 win over South Florida. Pitt is ranked No. 15 in the country and is off to a 7-1 start.
Noel Devine named Big East player of the week
West Virginia running back Noel Devine was named Big East player of the week today. Devine rushed for 178 yards and one touchdown in West Virginia's 28-24 win against UCONN on Saturday.
