The market is flooded with wingers, highlighted by Carolina’s Jeff Skinner, Montreal’s Max Pacioretty.
Then there’s JVR in Toronto who could command 6-7 years at $6.5-$7 million per and Ilya Kovalchuk who has already scheduled meetings with six clubs over the next 10-14 days, is seeking a 3 year, $18 million contract.
An asking price for Skinner has been established at a first round pick and young NHL prospect.
The price for Pacioretty continues to be steep with the Canadiens coveting a young centerman but both players are strongly expected to move.
Three teams considering Skinner — Los Angeles, Florida, Buffalo — are also said to be a giving [hide] Kessel a thought.
One advantage the Penguins have with Kessel on the market is cost certainty where Kessel has 4 years left on his deal with a $6.8 million cap hit, though, he is owed just over $21 million in actual cash from the Penguins.
Clubs also believe Pittsburgh is motivated to retain a small percentage of money in the right deal.
A big point of discussion for clubs in regards to Kessel is about bringing him in the room, where the sense continues to be that Kessel needs a veteran group around him like in Pittsburgh that doesn’t have a problem (players) with the way he practices and critical things off the ice that are not considered the best example to lead for young players.
That’s why Los Angeles continues to lurk as a possible trade partner because of the veteran room they have.
The Kings are also one of 8 teams on Kessel’s approved trade list. Something to keep in mind as is Chicago, Nashville, a league source says. [/hide]

I wouldn’t have given more than Sheary (salary dump) for Domi. You would have to be an absolute moron to give up a proven 20-30 goal scorer at the age of 24 for a kid who has 36 career goals and is 23. Get over the last name, Montreal got ripped off.

This year taught us that a shitty blueline and no scoring depth gets you booted out of the playoffs.

If D was a real insider, he’d be able to tell you that there are people in the organization felt that having Fleury as a backup drove Murray to play better and he didn’t have that drive this year. Bank on it that there will be an established vet backing up and pushing murray, not the Jarry/DeSmith combo from this year.

I did and still believe he will be a better goalie in the long run. Definately a better value goalie in the next 3-5 years with contracts.

I’m a huge fan of Dubois, but no way CBJ trades him. He’s their future. 3rd overall pick with a breakout rookie season. I also think we could get an asset for Sheary, but it would certainly be worth it if he signed.
I also don’t see why you want to move Maata so badly. We’re thin at D and he’s well worth his value.

I wonder what the asking price for Domi would be. Very low production, but lots of potential and still very young. It should be an interesting couple weeks. With any luck, we’ll have more winger and defensive depth and Letang won’t be on our roster.

I’d take it. I’m not as down on Sheary as most. He’s still young and put up 18 goals (3rd on the team in even strength goals). 3mil isn’t cheap, but 2 years at that price for around 20 goals is far from a terrible contract.

What? I think the way you crank out hockey coaches in the NHL, that Kessell would be more important 5 years from now when the Pens are trying to win a cup. I think Sullivan is the same as Tortarella, but with 2 superstars to cover up his attitude flaws. I believe if he had his way, he’d build a team of 9 20 goal scorers who played both way. I was just reading something about trade speculations and one suggestion was Kessel to the Wild, who are on his list, for F Jason Zucker, F Kirill Kaprizov (KHL prospect.) Zucker is 26, put up 33 goals with 64 points. Personally I do not want to see Phil go anywhere but the back end needs fixing badly and if he stays he has to start sitting when he is injuried. I would rather have a chance at another cup then an iron man streak no one will remember.
I’d still love the Pens to keep Kessel, but think we’ve all seen this movie before with Cole. If JR does move him I truly hope he doesn’t retain anything. The only other winger mentioned up there who is close in pts is Patches (67 -Twice), even JVR Total Pts (61 in 13/14) for a season were never 92! Again none of those wingers are a PT PER GAME winger.
