Is Juuso Riikola capable of filling that puck moving void the Penguins will now have?
The skill set might be there to be a puck moving presence but the capability is another story.
Riikola was okay vs Vegas but was greatly exposed against the Canadiens where he didn’t look much in the mold of an NHL defenseman.
Two games in just isn’t a big enough sample to know what the Penguins have.
The microscope is now squarely on Olli Maatta who returned to the lineup vs the Canadiens and was somehow at 13% in possession, on the ice for 4 shots attempts and 25 against in over 17 minutes of ice time 5-on-5.

Mike Sullivan is currently 3rd of active coaches with their teams in win% (coming into 2018); he sits 7th in wins but everyone ahead of him has at the VERY LEAST a half season more… most with hundreds more games coached for their team. That said, the Penguins would have to be historically bad with this roster to move away from a head coach who has two cups in three years as head coach. The number of fucken morons wondering if Sullivan is on the hot seat this early is likely closer to 2 right now.
With the amount of times the Penguins matched up against Washington over the years in the playoffs they were bound to lose eventually. Law of averages. They played more hockey in the past few years then any team. Exhaustion was going to kick in eventually. Winning two cups in a row in the salary cap era is almost impossible but after winning two cups and making to game six of the division finals I would definatley put Sully on the hotseat after a 2-1-1 start.

Hypothetical trade bait… had Shultz not gotten hurt what would people think about doing a reclamation trade. Packaging Maatta and Sprong to a team who has similar players who are under achieving and could use a change of scenery. Sprong has been completely damaged by the Penguins organization. He has no confidence left and the team has none in him and Maatta just keeps going backwards. They can both benefit from a change of scenery.
Who would you bring back? Thats 4 Million we could add back. Gardiner would be interesting but that cold be too many of the same guy and he will get a bit of a raise soon
I honestly believe Maatta and or Sprong will not get you much back in return. Maatta maybe if a team is looking for a Stanley Cup winning Dmen who is still young and can be rebuilt or maybe better suited in a different system. Sprong for his development just needs to go somewhere else and start fresh. His stock is so low now that you would have to take a simular player back in return or a late draft pick. Sully has no faith in him at all. He has so much potential but it will not be in Pittsburgh.
