Teddy Purcell tied the game at 3-3, 6:50 into the third period but Malkin took over, scoring 48 seconds later (7:38) for his 19th of the season giving Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead. Minutes later, Malkin pushed Pittsburgh’s lead to 5-3 at 9:27 of the period for his second goal of the game and 20th of the season. Malkin capped off the game with an empty net goal for his second hat trick of the season and 8th of his career. Malkin’s big game moved him into second in the NHL in points, trailing Henrik Sedin (52 pts) by one point. Sedin has appeared in 8 more games than Malkin.
