Maple Leafs to acquire J.S. Giguere and defenseman Dion Phaneuf

It appears the first major blockbuster trade of the 2010 NHL trade deadline is about go down as there will be a major shakeup in Toronto.

In fact, it's a multi-team/multi-player deal.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks, pending his approval, a source told ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun.

Meanwhile, TSN.CA is reporting the Calgary Flames have traded star defenseman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

so how close are the flames to the cap with this trade now(if they gained anything at all)? stajan and borque will both be ufas and probably gonna want a little more than what they are making now. it would be interesting to see who they will sign.

Actually the gained a little cap room with the trade. And as far as UFAs go, if they let Jokinen go that's 5 mill the get to put towards Borque and Stajan

I mean I only mentioned Jokinen but they have a bunch of people they can do without next year, like McGratten and Conroy. It's J-Bo's contract that is the killer, he's not even close to being a 6.75 mill player in my book

Yep - me too. 23 year old defenseman that's already been nominated for a Norris Trophy and all they gave up was a bunch of 2nd/3rd liners and Ian White. Talk about Burkey redeeming himself for the Kessel trade.

Yea I doubt the thrashers would have any interest in anything TOR has. Thrashers are rebuilding still. They want young talent and draft picks. Leave the veteran Dman to a conteder
