The signing period for international free agents begins July 2nd as MLB teams will be able to make official offers to highly touted Dominican prospect SS Miguel Sano.
There has been a belief that the Pirates have the inside track to land Sano but it is not a foregone conclusion that Sano will sign with the Pirates as up to 10 teams are expressing interest.
According to reports, the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals are the newest teams to express interest. The Yankees will work out Sano next week, as will the Baltimore Orioles (for 2nd time).
Less than four weeks until teams can make offers, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins remain the front runners but the price is going up. It is believed that Sano is seeking a signing bonus of $4.25 million.
Pittsburgh were told will not go above $4 million.
The Cubs, Blue Jays, Marlins and Indians are also in the mix.
