Pittsburgh Penguins forward Mike Rupp and his wife, Christi, will host a fundraiser at CONSOL Energy Center on Monday, April 11 from 6-7:30 pm to benefit the Cleland family of South Park.
Rupp and Pens defensemen Kris Letang and Brooks Orpik will be on hand to sign autographs, along with two members of the Pittsburgh Pirates – third baseman Pedro Alvarez and pitcher Paul Maholm.
Wristbands for the fundraiser will go on sale exclusively on pittsburghpenguins.com on Wednesday, April 6 at 2 pm for $35 each. Wristbands are limited and must be purchased in advance. They will not be available for sale the night of the event.
Nicole Cleland was driving on the South Side in December when her car was struck by a drunk driver. Her 7-year-old daughter Lexa was killed in the tragic accident. Nicole suffered severe injuries and continues to recover in a rehabilitation facility.
The Rupps were touched when they saw the Cleland family’s story on the local news and knew immediately they wanted to do something to help.
“We have three children of our own, so Christi and I tried to put ourselves in this family’s shoes and were deeply moved,” said Rupp. “When I shared their story with some of my teammates and friends at the Pirates, they wanted to help, too. We are hoping this fundraiser will help alleviate some of the financial stress the family is under so they can focus on healing.”
