Sources tell TIOPS the Chicago Cubs are back in the mix for Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez.
The Cubs have been “kicking the tires” on Sanchez since the All-Star break but ownership issues have plagued their ability to become serious suitors to this point.
The Cubs are also in on reliever John Grabow. Pittsburgh has been scouting Cubs prospect Jay Jackson.
The Pirates remain in deep discussions with the San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twins. The Giants and the Twins remain the favorites to land Sanchez despite the emergence of the Cubs.
Indications if Sanchez is dealt to the Giants, a trade will not be official until after Wednesday’s game.
