Pirates looking at Justin Duchscherer
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on Monday that the Pirates are one of several teams taking a look at free agent pitcher Justin Duchscherer (clinical depression). Duchscherer missed all of the 2009 season following hip and elbow surgery. Another concern for Duchscherer is that he suffers from clinical depression.
But, its hard to imagine Duchsherer signing in Pittsburgh. He made a salary of $3.9 million in 2009, after a 10-8 season in 2008. Pittsburgh is believed to be looking at Duchsherer for under $2 million per season.
Pittsburgh continues to look for for bargain-basement free agents.
*Pirates GM Neal Huntington continues to claim that Ryan Doumit is not available. League executives continue to indicate otherwise. One team exploring the trade market for catching help is the New York Mets.
The Winter Meetings will be held from December 7 - 11
Nady to St. Louis
Former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Xaiver Nady has been targeted by the St. Louis Cardinals as a backup for plan for Matt Holliday.
Reportedly the Cardinals won't pursue Jason Bay if they miss out on Matt Holliday.
Nationals a sleeper in the Lackey sweepstakes
Just because the Washington Nationals are a small-market team, doesn't mean they won't get involved for the top free agents on the market.
Last year they offered $160 million to Mark Teixeira and reportedly they are very much in the mix for pitcher John Lackey who is seeking upwards of $100 million on the market.
The Nationals are looking a long-term top of the line starter to team with 2009 1st overall pick Stephen Strasburg.
