INDIANA, Pa. (April 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania men’s track & field team won three events on Saturday at the IUP Ed Fry Invitational, highlighted by junior two-time All-American Brice Myers (Pittsburgh, Pa./McDowell) provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter hurdles.
Myers won the event by seven-tenths of a second with a personal-best time of 14.64 seconds, which improves his Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-leading seed time. Competing for only the second time this outdoor season, Myers’ time ranks him among the top 20 nationally this season.
Freshman Toby Oduho (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) gave the Vulcans a 1-2 finish in the 110-meter hurdles, as he crossed the finish line in 15.34 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, senior Frank Ehrensberger (Saint Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) posted a time of 48.34 seconds to win the event by three-tenths of a second. Sophomore Vince Wilson (Bear, Del./Middletown) finished sixth overall in the 400 meters with a time of 50.63 seconds.
Myers and Ehrensberger were also members of the Vulcans’ winning 4×100-meter relay at IUP. Freshman Dwight Phillips (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West), Myers, freshman Da’Joun Heidelberg (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Ehrensberger won the relay event after crossing the finish line in 42.79 seconds.
Phillips also finished second overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.11 seconds. Freshman Bobby Ralls (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) set a season-best time in the event with a time of 11.38 to finish eighth in a field of 22 runners.
Freshman Chris Werner (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 10,000-meter run after winning the event with a time of 32 minutes, 55.05 seconds while competing in the event for the first time. Classmate Christopher Poss (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) finished second in the 10K after posting a time of 33:22.09.
In the 800-meter run, freshman Aaron Roe (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) placed sixth with a time of 1:58.44. Fellow freshman Brent Frey (Danville, Pa./Warrior Run) also finished sixth in the javelin throw with a heave of 47.42 meters (155-7 feet).
Newcomer Jake Hillegas (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) posted the season-best distance for the Vulcans in the discus throw with a mark of 33.16 meters (108-9 feet), while junior tri-captain Kyle Spaniol (Coraopolis, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) accomplished the same superlative feat in the hammer throw with a distance of 38.33 meters (125-9 feet).
Cal U returns to action next weekend when it competes at the prestigious Penn Relays, beginning on Thursday, April 22.
