Although the Steelers have been encouraged with the progress of tight end Sean McHugh who under-went arthoscopic knee surgery last Tuesday, the Steelers are strongly considering placing McHugh on injured reserve.
McHugh will be evaluated later this week prior to cut down day on Saturday.
The emergence of rookie tight end David Johnson has the Steelers quite comfortable if they decide to place McHugh on injured reserve.
Mike Tomlin praised Johnson at his weekly press conference.
“David’s the guy who is taking advantage of some extra snaps because of that situation, and he’ll get some more snaps this week and we’ll see how he sorts out. But, no question, to this point he’s represented himself well and really has our attention going into this last week.”
Team insiders indicate Johnson has the inside track on earning a roster spot, regardless of whether McHugh is placed on injured reserve.
The team would considering keeping four tight ends but that appears unlikely.
