NHL cancels games through January 14 as drop-dead date for season looms

50.8% of NHL games have now been axed as the National Hockey League today announced that games through January 14 have been cancelled.
A total of 625 NHL games have been wiped out and for the Penguins, 42 games have been cancelled, 20 home, 22 on the road.

All indications are that the NHL intends to establish a drop-dead date for the season to start on January 15th, while some believe the drop-dead date will be January 20th. Either way, the league won’t consider a season under 48 games.
