PENGUINS IN THE VANEK SWEEPSTAKES?
Are the Penguins a surprise suitor in the Thomas Vanek sweepstakes?
NHL Insider Bob McKenzie hints at the Penguins being a potential trade suitor for Vanek.
“Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins amongst those that will be interested in getting a scoring winger, rental, at the deadline,” McKenzie said on Insider Trading. “Pittsburgh got some cap issues but that’s what the doctor has ordered for a lot of contending teams.”
My read on McKenzie mentioning the Penguins —— means he’s heard the Penguins are interested in Vanek.
Why there could be some smoke here: There has been some chatter in recent days that the Penguins don’t see an ideal trade out there to acquire a long-term winger after asking about two top targets in Blake Wheeler and David Perron, sources say, and if the Penguins acquire a top-6 winger, it will likely come via the rental route.
While the Penguins have been lukewarm about going the rental route, you never rule anything out with a win now team that has a lot of pressure on them to reach the Stanley Cup Finals this summer.
