In an attempt to keep both Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin, will the Penguins look to get rid of others?
“A league executive told QMI Agency he expects the Penguins to either move Kunitz or Neal with the cap going down to make room to keep Malkin, who is only one year from being an unrestricted free agent,” Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
If the Penguins were to go this route like Garrioch’s league source thinks, you can also put Paul Martin on the list. Martin has two years remaining on his deal with a cap hit of $5 million.
Moving Kunitz, though, does nothing in relating to new contract extensions for Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin as he is not under contract for the 2014-2015 season. Kunitz, 33, is a free agent after the 2013-2014 season. Kunitz, though, turns 34 in September and despite being a heart and soul player and first line winger, it wouldn’t be the wildest idea to gauge his trade value with how his body is likely to break down pretty soon.
