The Pittsburgh Penguins open their new facility the Consol Energy Center at the start of the 2010-2011 season. Team and county officials have been pushing hard for Pittsburgh to host the All-Star game within the first couple years that the new arena opens.
With no All-Star game in 2010 due to the Olympics, Phoenix has already been awarded the 2011 game. Reports in Canada indicate the mid-season celebration is expected to be played at Scotiabank Place in 2012. Senators president Roy Mlakar confirmed this weekend to the press that owner Eugene Melnyk has been promised an all-star game.
Pittsburgh who hasn’t hosted the game since 1990, likely won’t have the opportunity to host the mid-season celebration until 2013 at the earliest.
