According to a source the Rob Scuderi contract situation is very similar to Ryan Malone’s situation from last season.

In January, Scuderi asked for an extension, and was willing to do it at significant hometown type discount in exchanged for some long-term security believed to be a three year deal in the range of $1.4 million per season. Sources tell me Penguins general manager Ray Shero was not interested in signing Scuderi to a long term deal at the time and it has led to a scenario where Scuderi will likely leave via free agency.
Speculation has Scuderi interested in returning close to his family in Long Island and the Rangers inquired about Scuderi at the trade deadline.
Scuderi, 30, currently makes $725,000 per season and is expected to receive a deal in the range of $1.6 – $2 million per season on the open market.
