No movement towards a new deal between Pens, Gonchar today

Two sides still negotiating

Negotiations between Pens GM Ray Shero and J.P. Barry the agent for Sergei Gonchar continued this morning after Gonchar's camp took the weekend to consider their options.

Sources in Gonchar's camp tell me this afternoon that there has been "no movement" towards a new deal today. The Penguins I'm told are not showing a willingness to increase their current two year offer.

Negotiations though are expected to continue into tomorrow, Inside Pittsburgh Sports has learned.

Gonchar's camp has informed the Penguins that they would like to push forward and try to workout a new deal and are not ready to make a decision on testing free agency.

When asked if talks were getting close to breaking off until after July 1, Barry said, "No, still talking."

ONE bad play by Gonchar against Monteal does not mean he sucks. The game before that he stepped up and got penalized. You can't blame Gonchar for the playoffs. Not when MAF was subpar and our big 2 went missing.

LOAF, best comment I've read so far and totally agree. Having Orpik, Hamhuis, and Volchy would be amongst the league's best 3 shutdown D-man to go along with the offensive Letang, Gogo, and Lovejoy. Sooner or later we are going to have to let Letang and Gogo evolve or we'll never know what we have with them. I have seen enough in at least Letang to give him the reigns of the powerplay and I think Gogo is good enough to complement him as well as Hamhuis

Jeffed- just my opinion but MAF is getting over paid. He has very bad consistency issues. Sure e plays great some times but we start way too many games down 1 or 2 nothing under 5 minutes into the game.

Anyone who things MAF is overpaid needs to take a look around the league and see how bad it is. What goalie would you rather have than MAF, all things considered? The only one I'd even consider swapping him for would be Ryan Miller. Ask Philly and Ottawa what life is like without a top goaltender. And yes, he's more inconsistent than I'd like, but most goalies are. It's one of the most difficult jobs in sports. Bottom line is that he wins, and when he has a solid D in front of him he can be outright dominant.

MAF's salary is very reasonable, especially considering he hasn't even hit his prime yet. He is still only 25 years old. There are a ton of goalies that make more than him that haven't won anything

No idea why, but he had a iffy season. Maybe it was the defense, maybe it was just fleury, not trying to make excuses. I just think that he will bounce back next season. As I said before, he DID win us a cup, and had an excellent performance the year before that.

Yeah in the post season, I agree, but he was well below average in the regular season every year of his career except for one. I've looked up the stats and done comparisons before, I'm not going to do it again though. If he would be even middle of the road in the most important goalie statistics this team would get a higher seed every year.

i am tired of people thinking that gonch's only defensive "slip" last year was the lapierre goal. gonch has looked lazy in the d-end for the past 2 seasons. yes he can put up 65 points a year, fantastic. but his plus minus shows what happens when he's not playing QB. i am not calling gonchar a pylon by any means, but the Defense needs upgraded him leaving does not hurt us in the d-zone.

Again, he's had more than one bad season, there's no way around that. Look at the numbers, they don't lie unfortunately. He's a below average goaltender when you look at the numbers. He's had a couple great playoff runs, no one's taking that away from him but his regular seasons (outside of one year) leave a lot to be desired.

fleury had a very good save percentage the 2 seasons before last, both in the playoffs and in the regular season. Plus, he always has a great winning percentage (aside from the dark years). And as long as we make the playoffs, I dont really care where we seed, 2 out of the past 3 seasons fleury has shown up big in the playoffs, and that's what matters. Would you rather have a goalie like nabokov, that dominates in he regular season but that chokes in the playofs?

MAF had an off-year last year, that is beyond debate. However, that does NOT make him a mediocre or bad goalie. It means he had an off-year. Look at the previous two years... he dominated in the playoffs. And he started off en fuego last year in the regular season before falling off his game. Maybe he was hurt; we'll never know. But I expect a solid season from Flower.

Never said he was mediocre or bad, he's a middle of the road goalie at best. He played very well in two playoff runs. Why completely ignore regular season stats? I don't get it. Every other player is subject to scrutiny in their regular season performance but not him.

Question: Does anyone have a concern with overloading on defense this year knowing all of the depth that we have in our system. The Pens have about 4-5 defensemen that are ready to role in the next 1-2 years. Signing Hamhuis,Volchy,or Martin to 4-5 year deals only slows there progress, not to mention these players in our system will come with an initially low cap hit. It's a hard situation with the defense needing an immediate upgrade and there being no wingers on the market. I think that we need to start trading some of this defensive depth like a Strait, Sneep, Samuelson, etc.. for some winger prospects. It does not make sense to have all this depth in the minors and it not be used. I would make Despres and Bortuzzo the only untouchables. Thoughts???

Its a decent plan. You have to bring the wings up through your system or sign budget ones. At this time we only have 1 winger space open. If we resign guerin or sign a player at around 2 mil, then we will be fine. we were 5th in the league last year in GF.

Shero has made some mistakes, (Poni, Satan, maybe leopold...) but all in all he is a great GM, especially when it comes to getting upcoming FA to sign cheap (Feds, Guerin, Cooke, Kennedy... ets.)

hard to say jeffed. he got paid so little this season but had such an excellent run after he came back from injury. maybe upwards of 3 million.

He's never played more than 71 games which he set as a career high last year. and the year before he only played 10 cause of a broken leg. i think 2.5 would even be high for him

dynamic, I would take whitney out of that equation and add nick boynton. then we still have room for the possibility of tangradi and more cap space for the deadline.

really just don't want Gonchar back for another 3, hopefully Shero doesn't budge. Really like to see 2 of Hamhuis, Volchy, Michalek, or Martin. Really seem to have separated themselves from the rest. Willie Mitchell isn't a bad option but has had severe concussion problems

Im curious about one winger on the market... now I am by no means in a hurry to see this kid signed but I wonder if Pouliot will be spoken to by Shero... he would be inexpensive and has a history with Sid. I know some GMs like to try that crap once in awhile... D what do you think the odds of us trying out this kind of experiment?

Please god no Jason blake he's brtual now there is someone and takes alot of shots ans misses the net majority of the time. i think rhe pens have picked up enough maple leafs garbage. and a 4 mil plus cap hit

If the third year is a sticking point, can they sign him to a vet minimum deal with incentive that bring it up to where both sides were comfortable? In that third year that is...the other 2 would be what they have now.
