The Chicago Blackhawks have struck new deals with star forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Both players received identical 8 year extensions worth $84 million with a $10.5 million cap hit.
The new deals kick in for the 2015-2016 season. The salary cap currently at $69 million, is expected to increase to around $75 million for 15-16 when the new TV deal kicks in.
Alexander Ovechkin currently has the highest cap hit in the NHL at $9,538,462 and Kane, Toews will both top that next season.
Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby each count a combined $18.2 against the cap for the Penguins per season. Kane and Toews will count $21 million against the cap.
When the Penguins signed Sidney Crosby to a 12 year extension in the summer of 2012, it was before the new CBA and teams still had the luxury of doing cheat deals.
When you break down the first eight years (max term allowed under new CBA) of Crosby’s 12 year deal, he will receive $86.4 million.
