Penguins land Jason Zucker
The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired winger Jason Zucker from the Minnesota Wild. Zucker, 28, has three years remaining on his contract with a $5.5 million cap hit. Rutherford had honed in on Zucker for weeks and the inclusion of top prospect Calen Addison sealed the deal as Rutherford makes his big move two weeks prior to the Feb 24th trade deadline.

In the trade Minnesota receives Alex Galchenyuk (a thrown-in), a 2020 1st round pick and defenseman Calen Addison.
Zucker, 28, has three more years beyond this one with an AAV of $5.5M. PIT initially wasn’t keen on giving up prospect defenceman Calen Addison, or for that matter the first-round pick, but PIT is all about maximizing the Sid-Geno window to win Cup(s) now.

Pittsburgh including Addison will catch much of the league by surprise as the Penguins brass had been telling rival GM’s for weeks that moving Addison or 2019 1st round pick Samuel Poulin was something they were not willing to do. That was even the case in trade talks with Wild until things got to the point in the last 24 hours where the Penguins knew it was going to be Addison or no deal.
For Wild GM Bill Guerin, he had to get a strong return for Zucker if he was going to do business with the Penguins. It was just going to be a bad look to deal with the team you just came from if the Wild came out of this with lets say a 2nd rounder and mid-tier prospect.
Guerin does very well in landing a 1st rounder and a higher end prospect in Calen Addison that could be in the NHL next season.

maybe they promise first crack at Murray in the off season as well lord knows they’re goal tending is shaky…

JR isn’t done yet. Addison may be good, but he’s not yet proven at the NHL either. For all we know they could have turned out to be Ian Moran

Interesting that the deal didn’t involve Bjugstad as widely thought and reported. Guessing his injury is worse than being reported.

Unless someone can convince he there’s more value at the draft then Pens should trade one of their two goalies.
Saying you trade Murray and you keep Jarry (who has zero playoff experience) and he can’t handle the spot light or get’s hurt you will have DeSmith (also with zero playoff experience) as your backup. How is that a good tandem? Who will lead who when neither has any playoff experience? I think that will bite them in the arse. I would rather go with the devil I know then the one I don’t. Worry about Murray and Jarry in the off season.
Fair points. But they could pick up a Ryan Miller-caliber back up. Plus playoff inexperience didn’t seem to bother Jordan Binnington.
Then you have to trade Murray for a winger and/or defensemen and then you have to trade for a “back up” goalie during the trade deadline where they will def overpay. Not worth it.
People are pissed about the trade, but Marino made Addison expendable and that first probably won’t be ready until 2024. He’s a proven scorer that produced with a garbage offense in Minnesota. At least give it a chance. Still time and space to make more moves.
I saw your post on DK sports. Not sure how Moreno makes Addison expendable. Pens don’t have a third pairing RH Dman next season.

zucker is going to get 14 mins a night on the 3rd line and simon will skate with sid. who cares. this doesn’t change the fact that the coach will screw it up as he seeks balance. pens are still getting bounced in round 1
