The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms on a trade to send winger Conor Sheary and defenseman Matt Hunwick to the Buffalo Sabres for a mid-round draft pick.

Except Hunwick on his best day hasn’t been as good as Johnson on his worst day. Johnson will be fine as a 2nd pairing d-man or even at as a 3rd. He’s come here at an extreme bargain if the 5-6 per year reports were true.
Naw, while there are some risks he is already younger but has had a far better career to date. While I worry about his defending I did notice his stats on playoff teams were strong, which was only four teams… he is also playing for his first offence first team, curious how that impacts him.
Risks are noted but they land him near 3 with all the above considered and it could work out nicely. I mean he’s no Pouliot but then again few are

I was extremely excited to have the guy at the trade deadline. He dissapointed big time with his performance, but you saw flashes of what he can be from time to time.
I think this fall he has to get comfortable with his role, accept having to kill some penalties and be more defensive. There’s a good chance he’s gonna skate with Hagelin and Sprong. That is a high #2 line on probably 80% of the NHL.
You roll with him. If the experiment fails, you can always ship him in January for a good return.
Sure did but he also showed flashes of his ability. There is no doubt he came back to soon from that injury for a playoff run too.
Like I said, Jack Johnson would ve a great signing. I woulda stopped at 3 years though. If they can fix the 3C, get a 4th line winger and get a backup goalie, start making plans for a parade.

Well like it or not it is an upgrade over the guys that finished the season in the 6/7 spot by quite a bit. The cap hit seems to be 2.9-3.2 depending on the source. While someone could still swoop in and offer him a boat load which would mean he isnt coming to the burgh we can probably assume that isnt gonna happen. I’ll keep an open mind, but it sounds like a horrible signing. He was a healthy scratch at times last year and there were reports all year saying he’s not an NHL caliber defenseman anymore. With that, if the AAV is around 2.5, it’s not an albatross. If he can play solid defensively and bring some physicality to the bottom pairing, fine.
For a guy whose near bankrupt to leave, what sounds like a lot of money on the table, according to MacKenzie anyway I’m hoping he plays his ass off and excels under this system.

Actually the trade was Sheary and Hunwick for a condition 4th that could become a 3rd. The reason for that valuation is due to the dogshit value that Hunwick had. Stop being stupid, the Pens accepted a 4th to have Buffalo eat 5.25 million in salary and take a very bad deal in Hunwick for 2 years
Sheary was literally a move to open cap space likely for a defencemen because we cannot trust Letang to play 25 a night anymore
I don’t care if the Penguins got nothing for them, this was a great hockey trade. Two bad contracts are gone and nothing came back in return. $5.25 cleared off the books to be used on better players.
Sheary’s contract was not bad. Expendable, yes. But not bad.

That works if Johnson takes the sub $3M / 1 year prove it contract he deserves. But if Mckenzie’s speculation of $6M is anywhere close, then not happening.
Also doubt it would be Duclair and Kunitz. Probably either or.
At this point I think Duclair has a high chance of being a Penguin… it is a curiosity as he has struggled in most places and people thought he would work out in Chicago… then again when the best C on the team is Toews there really isnt a lot of depth to work with. Maybe he breaks out a bit with Brassard
I prefer Duclair over Kunitz. Younger, faster, better scoring touch at this stage. I think, ideally, hes on the 4th line with a chance to move up when injuries occur.

With JJ I look at it as a serious upgrade from Hunwick/Ruhwedel despite his deficiencies. Everywhere we look PGH people have him linked to the Pens

Why would they bring Kunitz back?
I wouldn’t be a fan, but with his history here and an opening at LW on our fourth, I could see it.
If he played part time during the season to keep him fresh for the playoffs, he could be a good addition. He faded down the stretch for Tampa.
In a bottom 6 role and PK he should be a better fit that Kuhnhackl, that said the risk is how much of his legs does he lose over the summer.
I dunno, ask the team… they have been connected to him for days. A lot of chatter around the idea of Kunitz coming back in a depth role
