Restricted Free Agent Bobby Farnham today agreed to a one year, $575,000 contract with the Penguins. The deal is a 2-way contract but Farnham internally is looked at by the Penguins brass as the likely 13th forward on roster, that’s if the cap space is there to carry 13 forwards to start the season.
The Penguins are moving away from having a fourth line with players like Craig Adams, Zach Sill or Max Lapierre among their top-12. They have identified the need to have four skilled lines and want their top-12 forwards to consist of players who fit that mold.
Bobby Farnham does not fit that mold by any means.
However,

Penguins GM Jim Rutherford and head coach Mike Johnston have identified the need to have a player on the roster as the 13th forward who provides a different element and suits up when needed for when the Penguins need to add some toughness or energy into the lineup.
Farnham will be looked at as the top contender for the 13th forward spot going into camp.
Farnham’s energy and personality has made him a cult favorite and some can argue it’s a bit overboard but he plays so hard especially in the corners, he draws a lot of penalties, 4.6 per 60 minutes which was tops in the NHL.
